Newcastle United are still at risk of becoming weaker, despite the January transfer window closing.

The Magpies sanctioned two major departures recently, with Miguel Almiron joining Atlanta United and Lloyd Kelly moving to Juventus.

While Eddie Howe was reluctant to lose both players, Newcastle’s PSR position has been boosted by their exits.

However, there is still the possibility of one more St James’ Park exit.

Newcastle United defender Kieran Trippier is a target for Galatasaray.

The 34-year-old could have a route out of the club, with Trippier keen to join Galatasaray after asking to leave Newcastle United last summer.

There is not a massive rush to strike a deal, as the Turkish transfer window remains open until February 11th. However, there is reportedly a willingness to do business within the next 24 hours.

That is according to ESPN, who report that Galatasaray would ideally like to sign Trippier before February 6th so he can be included in their updated Europa League squad.

However, ESPN add that a deal to sign Kieran Trippier from Newcastle has been described as ‘complicated’.

Newcastle United must avoid PSR temptation

From a business perspective, moving Trippier on now would make sense. While he is not massively valuable in terms of a transfer fee, he is one of Newcastle’s highest earners.

While Newcastle have prioritised PSR by letting Kelly go, the actual football must be the priority when it comes to Trippier.

Eddie Howe simply cannot afford to weaken his squad any further. And Trippier is not just any player. He is vastly experienced, and is a pivotal character behind the scenes. As Newcastle target silverware and Champions League qualification, they will need to lean players like Trippier.

While a move to Turkey is understandably appealing for Trippier, Newcastle United’s decision makers must be aligned in their desire to keep him at St James’ Park for the rest of the season.
