Keith Downie predicts whether Newcastle can sign a winger if they spend big Marc Guehi

Newcastle United are aiming to spend big on Marc Guehi, but he might not be the only major addition to Eddie Howe’s squad.

The Magpies are in talks to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, with Newcastle’s first offer worth almost £65million being rejected.

But there is confidence that a deal will be done, with Guehi keen to sign for Newcastle United.

Getting the 24-year-old will be a serious statement of intent from the owners, as they prepare to potentially break the club’s transfer record to land the England international.

Newcastle also want to sign a winger

At the start of the summer, Newcastle had two priorities – a right-sided centre-back and a right winger.

If they sign Guehi, they will have addressed the former. However, the finances involved in that deal cast doubt over whether the Magpies can address the latter as well.

That is a concern, as a winger is arguably more pressing than a centre-back. While Guehi will be a great addition to Howe’s squad, he will join a talented crop of centre-backs at St James’ Park.

In contrast, it is clear that Newcastle desperately need someone who is better than Jacob Murphy and Miguel Almiron. Howe needs a marquee right winger to take his forward line to the next level – someone who can compliment current stars Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon.

Keith Downie suggests what could happen next at Newcastle

If Newcastle sign Guehi for £65million, it is unclear how much cash the Magpies will have left to spend on a winger. They may even have to sell before they buy.

That is what Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie expects to happen, after speaking on his YouTube channel about what could be next at Newcastle United if they complete a big money deal for Guehi.

“The biggest question, on the back of that [signing Guehi], is will Newcastle have the funds to bring in a right winger,” he said.

“We know they need to strengthen in that position. I would suggest if Guehi is going to cost around £65million plus then you may have to get someone out the door before you bring another one in.

“Whether that is a Trippier or an Almiron, or Trippier and Almiron, it sounds like you need to get someone else out to get the right winger in. That might be one we see later in the window.”

Newcastle may need to sell before they buy

If Newcastle do sign Guehi then their priority could shift back towards outgoings.

Downie has suggested that someone might need to be sold before Newcastle can go back into the transfer market for a winger. That will put Paul Mitchell under pressure, as it is vitally important that a new attacker arrives before the transfer window closes on August 30th.

The Sky Sports reporter suggested that Kieran Trippier or Miguel Almiron could leave, with both players linked with St James’ Park exits.

It has been reported that Trippier is likely to leave Newcastle, which is not a major shock as he enters the final 12 months of his contract. Eddie Howe wants to keep Trippier, but a Toon departure still feels probable given the fact he is 33-years-old and probably looking for one last major contract before he hangs up his boots.

As for Almiron, he is another player whose Newcastle career feels like it is coming to an end. The 30-year-old will be tougher to move on as he has a longer contract, but could secure a move to the Middle East as clubs in Saudi Arabia eye a deal.

In fact, Saudi Pro League side Al Qadsiah have been linked with Trippier and Almiron.

The Saudi Arabian market could give Newcastle an opportunity to sell both players, which would then allow them to splash out on a winger. Hopefully that happens, as it will be a major concern if the window closes without Newcastle addressing that position.
