Newcastle are almost certain to sell £12m player who Eddie Howe called ‘fundamental’ last season

Newcastle United have already sold two of their young stars this summer, and they could be followed out the door by one of the Magpies’ most experienced players.

Eddie Howe is waiting to see who Paul Mitchell can sign ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season, but there could still be more outgoings before the transfer window closes.

Newcastle United have already cashed in on Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, with the duo bringing in almost £70million total. That was vital as Newcastle battled to comply with PSR and avoid a points deduction.

While the PSR deadline has now passed, Newcastle are still in the market to sell. And that could result in them letting go of a player who has been absolutely pivotal since the change of ownership.

Update emerges on Kieran Trippier’s Newcastle United future

Newcastle have plenty of senior players who are now in the final year of their contract, one of which is Kieran Trippier.

And, according to the Telegraph, it is ‘increasingly certain’ that Newcastle United will sell Kieran Trippier this summer.

They add that the 33-year-old is attracting interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia, while he was also linked with AC Milan earlier this summer.

Eddie Howe could soon lose a key player in Trippier

Trippier was the first signing made by the new ownership, with the right-back arriving from Atletico Madrid for £12million.

It was a statement signing, and Trippier has gone on to have a seismic impact at St James’ Park.

He was reunited with Howe, and quickly became a leader. Trippier was effectively the manager on the pitch, viewed as Howe’s righthand man.

The role he has had cannot be downplayed, and it will be a real shame if he does go. Howe described Trippier as ‘fundamental‘ to how Newcastle operate earlier this year, and that could not be more true. He has been pivotal on and off the pitch, and has ended up playing some of the best football of his career on Tyneside.

Newcastle already have Trippier’s replacement if he leaves

But with Trippier now 33 and in the final year of his contract, a move away does feel likely. He nearly secured an exit in January, with Bayern Munich trying to sign the England international. However, they were unwilling to meet Newcastle’s asking price.

That was midway through the season, when it would have been much tougher to accept Trippier’s departure.

But it would be more palatable now, while Newcastle already have Trippier’s replacement. That is why Tino Livramento was brought to the club last year, and he has already shown that he is ready to permanently take Trippier’s place in the starting XI.

That could be about to happen sooner than expected, with a move away potentially on the cards for a player who should go down as a modern Newcastle United legend.
