Newcastle United are threatening to break their transfer record, as Paul Mitchell aims to make his first major signing at St James’ Park.

The new sporting director is hoping for a transfer breakthrough, and it could be the biggest in Newcastle United‘s history.

The Magpies’ current record signing is Alexander Isak, who cost £63million from Real Sociedad in 2022. He is Newcastle’s most expensive signing ever, followed by £55million Sandro Tonali.

Now those deals could be eclipsed, as PIF prepare to flex their financial muscles for the first time in 2024.

Newcastle make huge offer for Marc Guehi

Newcastle United are trying to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, and could be getting closer to agreeing a deal for the 24-year-old.

Guehi is keen to sign for Newcastle, but a transfer will not be cheap. When rumours of the Magpies’ interest first emerged, it was stated that Crystal Palace want more than £60million for Guehi.

They look likely to get that, with Newcastle becoming more confident about signing Guehi.

However, a deal is not in place as it stands, and a new report has provided details of the first offer submitted by Newcastle.

According to the Northern Echo, Newcastle have had an opening bid rejected by Palace, which was ‘reasonably close’ to the £65million that the Eagles are looking for.

They add that an improved offer is on the way, with Guehi seemingly still on course to move to the North East.

PIF investing in ‘Champions League level’ talent at Newcastle

While Don Hutchison has questioned why Newcastle are signing Guehi, most Toon fans are excited about the prospect of seeing the England international move to St James’ Park.

It is a statement of intent from the owners, as they prepare to splash out on one of the stars of Euro 2024, snatching him away from a Premier League rival.

If a deal is completed, Guehi will be an exciting signing ahead of what will hopefully be a special season.

The aim is to get back into Europe – ideally the Champions League. That is a competition that Guehi has never competed in, but he has been backed to play at that level in the past.

Danny Murphy spoke about the defender last October, and described Guehi as a ‘Champions League level player’. He also tipped Guehi to leave Palace in the summer of 2024, which is on course to happen if Newcastle can submit an acceptable offer.

In Guehi, Newcastle could be getting a high calibre centre-back who is ideally placed to take Fabian Schar’s place in the side. It is a signing for the present and the future, and a real statement of intent.

While Newcastle’s first offer has been rejected, it is not far away from Crystal Palace’s asking price. That is reason for optimism, as Toon officials edge closer towards a major signing.
