Newcastle United striker Callum Wilson has no doubt that David De Gea would want to move to St James’ Park in January.

The 33-year-old has been linked with a move to Tyneside following Nick Pope’s injury. De Gea is still a free agent after being released by Manchester United at the end of last season, and it has been claimed that he is keen on joining Eddie Howe’s side.

This comes after news that Pope is going to be out of action for up to five months after dislocating his shoulder in the 1-0 win over Manchester United.

Eddie Howe is now going to put his trust in Martin Dubravka, but there have still been rumours about a new goalkeeper arriving in the January transfer window.

While bringing someone else in would be a surprise, it is not a shock to hear that De Gea is being linked with a move to Tyneside. Rumours like that were inevitable after Pope’s injury, and De Gea would be the obvious choice given the fact he is available on a free.

Callum Wilson thinks everyone will want to sign for Newcastle

Now Callum Wilson has given his verdict on the De Gea rumours, after being asked to give his thoughts by Michail Antonio on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast.

“I’m sure everyone wants to come to Newcastle right now!,” he said.

“It’s the club to be at. We are playing good football, in the Champions League and pushing again this season, we have quarter finals and Sunderland coming up in January, so there is a lot of appetite for people who want to come and join us.”

Newcastle signing David De Gea would be a surprise

As Wilson says, of course a player like De Gea would want to sign for Newcastle right now. There is so much to be excited about, with big games each and every week.

Eddie Howe’s side are competing on all fronts, and it is an incredibly exciting time to be a Magpie.

But while players like De Gea might be keen, that does not mean that Newcastle United are. In fact, it has been claimed that the club are puzzled by talk of the Spaniard moving to St James’ Park in the near future.

In all honesty, it would be a surprise to see De Gea join Newcastle. While he is an excellent goalkeeper, his wage demands would be way too high.

Instead, it will be up to Dubravka to fill the void, and Howe has full confidence in the Slovakian ahead of his first Premier League start of the season against Everton on Thursday night.
