With Nick Pope set to miss up to five months of football, Newcastle United suddenly have a goalkeeper dilemma.

As it stands, Martin Dubravka will take Nick Pope‘s place – potentially for the rest of the season. However, there is hope that the England international might be able to return before the 2023/24 campaign comes to an end.

But with the January transfer window looming, Eddie Howe will soon have the opportunity to bring in another goalkeeper if he sees fit.

The first name that has been linked with a move to St James’ Park is David De Gea, with the Daily Mail reporting on Monday that the Magpies are interested in signing the 33-year-old on a free transfer.

He has been a free agent since the end of last season, after being released by Manchester United, where he won a Premier League, an FA Cup, two League Cups and a Europa League.

The Spaniard is an interesting name to be linked with a move to Tyneside, and a new report from TalkSPORT has shared how he actually feels about possibly signing for Eddie Howe’s side.

David De Gea interested in Newcastle transfer

According to TalkSPORT, De Gea is interested in signing for Newcastle in January. They state that he has offered his services to the Magpies following the injury to Pope.

TalkSPORT add that the option of signing someone like De Gea on a free could be appealing, as they are reluctant to splash the cash to bring in a Pope replacement.

But while De Gea would not cost us a transfer fee, his wages could prove to be an issue. His final contract at Man United saw him earn £375,000-a-week at Old Trafford, which would make him Newcastle’s best paid player ever.

TalkSPORT state that if De Gea is to join Newcastle, he will have to agree a deal on a much smaller wage.

However, if he really is interested in the move, there must be an acceptance that he is not going to earn the same kind of money he was getting at Man United.

Wages could be the stumbling block, as even half the amount he was previously on would put him among the Magpies’ top earners.

It would be a significant investment for a goalkeeper who would likely only be around for six months. In that respect, it would be a huge shock if Newcastle do make a move.

But he is an immensely talented goalkeeper who was consistently recognised among the Premier League’s elite. If money was no issue, he would be a brilliant signing following the disappointing news about Pope.
