Newcastle United are now considering a move for former Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea after news emerged that Nick Pope could be out for up to five months.

Pope suffered an unfortunate injury against Man United this weekend and could now be out for the rest of the season as it looks likely he will need surgery, leaving Newcastle to look for a temporary replacement.

The Daily Mail are now reporting that Newcastle are considering a move for David de Gea who is currently a free agent and has previously been identified by Newcastle as a weak link.

Newcastle targeted De Gea as a weakness in the past

Back in April, Jacob Murphy revealed that Newcastle and Eddie Howe had identified De Gea’s distribution as a weak link in the Man United team following their 2-0 victory against the Red Devils.

Despite being a brilliant shot-stopper, Pope has come under a lot of criticism for his weak distribution and this problem won’t be solved by the addition of De Gea.

This news won’t exactly fill Newcastle fans with confidence, but the Spaniard does at least have a wealth of Premier League experience and will be available immediately with no transfer fee.

Another issue will be how high his wage demands are with Newcastle having previously been keen to not break their current wage structure. It may be a free transfer but the wages he had at Man United – £375,000 a week – would blow any current Newcastle’s player’s out of the water.

Pope injury a huge blow to Newcastle

Pope was unfortunate to pick up an injury when diving for a save in Newcastle’s 1-0 victory against Man United and now faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

The former Burnley man had just put in one of the performance’s of his career against PSG and was looking to get back into the England team for the summer, but his injury now puts that in serious doubt.

Martin Dubravka would be the current backup choice for Newcastle, but Eddie Howe may not be too comfortable trusting the Slovakian in this crucial run of games and instead could opt to replace him with the former Man United star.
