Newcastle United have had a long-term interest in Wolves attacker Matheus Cunha.
Brazilian star Matheus Cunha is having a standout season for the Premier League side, despite their poor campaign.
The 25-year-old scored his 11th goal of the season against Aston Villa on Saturday – after the game it was announced that Cunha had agreed a new deal with the club until 2029.
Toon staff are big fans of Cunha and have been for years. Newcastle wanted Cunha in 2022 while Dan Ashworth was the club’s sporting director. A move never materialised and he would end up joining Wolves in 2023.
Before signing a new deal, it looked like Cunha was going to leave Wolves – Newcastle were a possible suitor as well as Arsenal.
It was believed that Cunha would cost around £70m in the winter window. Now that he has been handed a new deal, Newcastle will be delighted to hear that the release clause has been included is lower than many would have expected.

Newcastle learn Matheus Cunha’s release clause
While it would have been difficult to sign Cunha in the winter transfer window because of his hefty fee. Newcastle are in a much better position to land someone of his quality in the summer.
Newcastle have sold Miguel Almiron and Lloyd Kelly in what look to be huge boosts to their PSR troubles – the money that has been taken off the club’s wage bill is a big positive in particular.
According to the Daily Mail, Cunha has a £62.5m release clause which will become active in the summer. The report also suggests that Tottenham are interested in the Brazilian who has 15 goal involvements in the Premier League this season.
Reports earlier in the transfer window suggested that Cunha would snub Newcastle for Arsenal if he had a choice of clubs. The 25-year-old is eager to play Champions League football but will most likely not have the opportunity to do that with Wolves next season.
Newcastle must wait until summer to spend big
It has been a very disappointing transfer window from an arrivals perspective. Once again, no signings have been made for Eddie Howe’s squad.
There have been attempts to sign players like Abdukodir Khusanov but PSR has been a major factor in the Magpies transfer business.
Newcastle fans felt let down by Paul Mitchell after he failed to land Vitor Reis who ultimately signed for Manchester City – some fans even began to ask questions about his position at the club.
The Kelly and Almiron sales are set to be big money spinners for the club which will help their PSR cause greatly. However, the big worry for Newcastle is now that they lack the necessary depth it takes to qualify for the Champions League.
If Newcastle do make it there, they will need to spend well to improve their squad.
