Newcastle United are keen to add depth to several positions in the January transfer window.

For Newcastle fans, the January transfer window has been a frustrating one. Nearly three weeks into January and Newcastle are yet to make a single first-team signing.

It is turning into an all too familiar story on Tyneside. The club are not spending when there is a clear need for improvement. The Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules are not helping their cause either.

In the last 12 months, Newcastle signing Lewis Hall can be the only one that is considered a major one in terms of how it has helped the team. Even though Lloyd Kelly, William Osula and Odysseas Vlachodimos were signed they have not made much of an impact in their first six months.

Despite a lack of signings, Newcastle are still keeping tabs on a number of players. Unfortunately, some of those players have gone on to sign for other clubs.

One such instance was when Newcastle were offered Donyell Malen by Borussia Dortmund. The Magpies passed up on the offer and Malen instead signed for Aston Villa.

Now, a Premier League man previously linked to Newcastle could still move to Tyneside after contract talks with his current club stalled.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Matheus Cunha has had a fantastic season while his side struggles to pick up points in the Premier League.

The Brazilian has scored 10 goals and bagged four assists in 20 Premier League games so far this season, the eighth highest in the league this season.

Newcastle were linked with Cunha before the January transfer window, but it would cost the club an eyewatering £70million to get the deal done.

It looked like Cunha was set to sign a new contract with Wolves. However, Fabrizio Romano has now stated otherwise. Romano claims that although there has been a verbal agreement over a new deal between the player and club, a deal is yet to be completed as there are still details that need to be finalised.

He also states that Arsenal are interested in the 25-year-old who could see Cunha as a cheaper alternative to Alexander Isak.

Newcastle’s interest in Cunha dates back to when Dan Ashworth was still sporting director. Cunha was offered to Newcastle by Atletico Madrid back in 2022.

Matheus Cunha compared to Alexander Isak

While Newcastle hold an interest in Cunha, it is difficult to see how he would fit in Eddie Howe’s starting XI alongside Isak. There is no doubt the pair would form an unbelievable partnership which is bound to score goals.

If need be, Cunha can be deployed as a No.10 where the majority of his goals have come from this season.

Like Isak, Cunha dribbling is excellent. He also has the ability to pull wide and confidently cross the ball into dangerous areas. His 10 goals from an xG of 4.4 is also admirable.

While £70m is a hefty fee to pay, his form this season is a sign it could be a risk worth taking.
