Newcastle United may have to go toe-to-toe with Arsenal to land their latest transfer target.

The January transfer window opens on Wednesday afternoon and Newcastle United will be on the lookout for improvements to Eddie Howe’s squad.

Sadly, the Profit and Sustainability Rules have put a hard cap on Newcastle’s January budget which means incomings will rely on players being sold.

Newcastle want to sign a new right winger, with Miguel Almiron set to leave in January to help boost the budget available to sporting director Paul Mitchell.

Another area Newcastle would like to improve is up front with Callum Wilson also facing an uncertain future at St James’ Park. The latest target on Newcastle’s transfer radar ticks both boxes.

Newcastle United interested in signing Matheus Cunha

There are several targets that Newcastle are keeping an eye on ahead of the January window, including Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo.

But according to the Daily Mail, Newcastle are showing an interest in Wolves forward Matheus Cunha.

Wolves have struggled this season but the 25-year-old Brazilian has been their standout player in the Premier League with Cunha scoring 10 goals in 19 league appearances.

The report adds that Arsenal are also showing an interest in Cunha but Wolves are determined to at least keep hold of the £70m-rated star until the summer.

Cunha is extremely versatile and is able to play anywhere across the front line or even as an attacking midfielder behind a central striker.

Newcastle had chance to sign Matheus Cunha in 2023

Wolves broke their transfer record to sign Cunha from Atletico Madrid for £43m in January 2023.

Just weeks before that move was completed, Cunha’s agent spoke to Newcastle about a potential move with Atletico keen to offload him in January.

Reports even claimed Cunha was offered to Newcastle before he eventually completed his move to Molineux.

Since moving to England, his value has only soared and Wolves will want to make a hefty profit on Cunha if they sell him next month. Because of the big asking price, a deal does seem unlikely for cash-strapped Newcastle.
