Newcastle United have learned how much it will cost to bring Atalanta midfielder Ederson to St James’ Park.
Signing a new midfielder is not a top priority for Newcastle United. After all, Eddie Howe believes central midfield is Newcastle’s strongest position.
In Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, the Magpies have one of the strongest, well-balanced midfields in the entire Premier League.
But with Sean Longstaff facing an uncertain future, adding to midfield is something Newcastle could explore in 2025 and one target on the club’s radar is Atalanta’s Ederson.
Newcastle have been long-term admirers of Ederson, who could join a close-knit Brazilian group already loving life on Tyneside.

Fabrizio Romano reveals Ederson asking price
Sporting director Paul Mitchell has a £70m budget for January – but any major signings would need to be followed by sales in order to avoid a PSR breach come the summer.
Ultimately, a new right winger is Newcastle’s top priority and Howe has warned January could be quiet.
Reports suggested Ederson was valued at £42m by Atalanta, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano now believes the Italian club will demand much more to let him leave this month.
Via GiveMeSport, Romano said: “It’s very difficult to sign Ederson in January, more than complicated.
“Atalanta sources guarantee €50m (£42m) reported fee is not even going to be enough. He’s in the list of four or five clubs, but I don’t think it’s going to be easy in January… at all.”
Newcastle United face fierce competition for Ederson’s signature
Ederson has been superb for Atalanta, who are firmly in the race for the Serie A title this season. That potentially explains why they are hesitant to let him leave this month.
If Ederson does leave, there are several Premier League clubs alongside Newcastle who are keen to strike a deal.
Manchester United want to beat Newcastle to Ederson, while Manchester City are also showing an interest in signing him in January.
As stated by Romano, there are “four or five clubs” who are keeping tabs on Ederson’s situation, but a move to St James’ Park only seems realistic in the summer.
