Newcastle United have been long-term admirers of Atalanta midfielder Ederson and fresh reports suggest their interest has not dwindled.

Geordie Boot Boys exclusively revealed over the summer that Newcastle were interested in Atalanta duo Giorgio Scalvini and Ederson.

Scalvini was one of the club’s many centre-back targets, although full attention eventually turned to trying to sign Crystal Palace’s Marc Guehi.

Ederson was also on Newcastle’s radar but the £42m midfield target made a U-turn and decided to stay with Atalanta.

Premier League rivals Liverpool were also interested in Ederson, as were Manchester United before their deadline day deal for Manuel Ugarte.

Newcastle United continue to target Ederson deal

Just like every other top target Newcastle had this summer, the club failed to get a deal over the line.

But TNT Sports Brazil report that Ederson is still being targeted by Newcastle. The Tyneside club could make a move in January or wait until next summer.

However, they are not alone in their pursuit of Ederson with European giants Barcelona, Manchester United and Juventus also still in the race.

CaughtOffside add that Ederson has shown previous interest in moving to the Premier League which could help Newcastle land the 25-year-old.

Newcastle fans could get a glimpse of Ederson in action on Thursday night as he prepares to make his Champions League debut against Arsenal.

Newcastle United have bigger priorities

Newcastle and sporting director Paul Mitchell will have a January transfer budget of £70m after the club’s cautious summer window.

While Ederson is an appealing target, a new central midfielder is certainly not a top priority for Newcastle.

Just like in the summer, a new centre-back target and a new right-sided winger will be at the top of the shopping list.

Apparently, Newcastle will prioritise a new right-sided winger signing. There have already been links to Anthony Elanga as well as a bizarre £25m move for Leroy Sane.
