How Chelsea will impact Newcastle’s plan to sign Marc Guehi without even making a bid

When Newcastle United signed Tino Livramento last summer, it was far from straightforward.

The Magpies eventually agreed a £32million deal with Southampton, with Tino Livramento arriving at St James’ Park after more than a month of speculation.

Toon officials identified the defender as a top target early in the summer, with rumours of Newcastle’s interest in Livramento emerging in late June. However, he did not officially become a part of Eddie Howe’s squad until early August.

The deal to sign Livramento was a big one – the club invested a lot of money in a player who they knew would not be a guaranteed starter immediately after his arrival. He was bought for his potential, with the view to replacing Kieran Trippier when the time was right.

The time could be now, with rumours suggesting that Newcastle will probably sell Trippier this summer.

Why the Tino Livramento deal was so difficult

When it came to the Livramento deal, the issue was not the player. Livramento was always keen on a move to Newcastle United.

The issue was actually Chelsea, and a sell-on clause that they included in the deal that saw the 21-year-old leave Stamford Bridge and sign for Southampton in 2021.

He cost the Saints £4million, but they agreed to give Chelsea a percentage of any profit they make should they decide to sell Livramento.

That decision was made last year when Southampton and Newcastle negotiated a deal to bring the defender to Tyneside. But agreeing a fee was not easy, as the Saints aimed to make as much money as possible to compensate the amount they would need to give Chelsea.

Newcastle could have the same issue with Marc Guehi

And that could be an issue for Newcastle once again this summer, as they aim to sign another Chelsea academy graduate.

Newcastle are trying to sign Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace, with the 24-year-old open to joining Eddie Howe’s side.

The fee will be the issue, with Palace wanting more than £60million for Guehi. They are asking for a lot of money, and understandably so.

Guehi‘s stock is higher than ever after his efforts at Euro 2024, while this is their last proper chance to seriously cash in. The centre-back has two years left to run on his current contract at Selhurst Park.

On top of that, the Times recently reported that Palace will owe 20% of whatever profit they make to Chelsea. That was part of the agreement that saw Guehi sign for the Eagles in 2021, with Palace paying £18million.

Hypothetically, let’s say that Newcastle sign Guehi for £60million. That would mean Palace have made £42million in profit. With 20% owed to Chelsea, the Blues would end up receiving just over £8million. If they sold him for £70million, Palace would owe Chelsea just over £10million.

This will come into Palace’s thinking as negotiations with Newcastle continue. Hopefully it does not prove to be a major stumbling block and an agreement can be reached, like it was with Livramento last summer.
