Newcastle consider fresh bid for ‘excellent’ player who Ashworth really rates

Newcastle United are going to have to improve their offer if they want to sign Tino Livramento from Southampton this summer.

The 20-year-old emerged as a major Newcastle target on Monday night, with the Magpies confident that they can agree a deal for the defender.

A move could lead to Harrison Ashby being loaned out, while there is also a chance that Ryan Fraser could be used as part of the deal. That would be a stroke of genius by Dan Ashworth.

As always, the issue is money. However, this deal is slightly more complicated due to Chelsea and a pesky sell-on clause they included when they sold Livramento to Southampton in 2021.

With both Newcastle and Southampton looking to reach an agreement, the Athletic have provided some more information on the situation.

Why Newcastle United’s move for Tino Livramento is complicated

According to the Athletic, Newcastle offered £23million to sign Livramento from Southampton. However, the Saints would actually only receive £15million of that sum.

That is because they need to give Chelsea a percentage of the profit they make after signing him for £4million two years ago.

To complicate matters even more, the percentage that Chelsea receive goes up the more Southampton receive. A £23million deal would see the Saints make £19million profit, but £8million of it would go to Chelsea.

Therefore, the South Coast club want to receive as much money as possible. The Athletic state that they want to receive around £30million, which would mean someone needs to agree a deal worth around £50million in total – which is far too much for the Magpies.

The Toon recruitment team proposed a deal worth £23million, and now the Athletic state that they are considering making an improved offer for the ‘excellent‘ defender.

Chelsea’s power in this deal muddies the waters, but it is testament to Livramento’s ability that Newcastle are trying to navigate their way through and bring him to St James’ Park.

Dan Ashworth wanted to sign the defender for Brighton

That could possibly be because of Sporting Director Dan Ashworth, who the Athletic state wanted to sign the youngster when he was working in a similar role for Brighton.

He was unable to do a deal, but is now getting a second bite of the cherry with Newcastle. However, he will cost a lot more money.

There is belief that a compromise can be reached, which is very exciting for Toon fans as they target a player who was once likened to a young Gareth Bale.
