Newcastle United are looking for potential replacements for Callum Wilson.

Wilson is out of contract at the end of the season and it looks like he’ll be leaving the club in the summer after nearly five years at the club.

There was even consideration that Wilson could leave Newcastle in January, but those discussions were quickly stopped after he suffered another injury.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been identified as a potential replacement for the 32-year-old. Newcastle tried to sign Calvert-Lewin last summer but weren’t able to meet the striker’s demands.

Like Wilson, Calvert-Lewin is also out of contract at the end of the season – Newcastle are poised to snap him up on a free.

Calvert-Lewin is open to staying at Everton, but it’s unknown whether those feelings have changed since David Moyes was reappointed Toffees boss.

Now, a recent report suggests Calvert-Lewin has been given the opportunity to move away from England in the summer.

Atalanta make Calvert-Lewin approach amid Newcastle interest

Atalanta aren’t the first team in Italy to make an approach for the England international. Fiorentina entered discussions with Calvert-Lewin in January as well as AC Milan who have fellow Englishmen Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Newcastle target Fikayo Tomori in their squad.

According to The Sun, the Europa League winners sent a representative to Merseyside to push for a move.

The report states that Atalanta may even try to sign the 27-year-old in January as they look to continue their push for the Serie A title.

Atlanta are currently second in the Italian top flight and sit 13th in the Champions League league phase and there’s a big chance they’ll be playing European football again next season – something which is bound to make Calvert-Lewin consider his options.

Teams outside of England hold the advantage in negotiations, they can speak with the player up to six months before their contract expires in comparison to clubs like Newcastle who can only enter negotiations with a month left.

The report claims that Newcastle will be waiting for Calvert-Lewin in the summer, as they plan to land him for free.

Calvert-Lewin compared to Alexander Isak

There’s no doubt that Calvert-Lewin is a completely different player to Alexander Isak. The Englishman enjoys winning the ball in the air or dropping deep to build up Everton’s counterattacks. His holdup play is admirable.

Isak is a player who enjoys getting behind the back line by either making a darting run or simply dribbling past a defender. His 15 goals in all competitions this season puts him amongst some of the best in Europe this season.

Calvert-Lewin will also compete with William Osula who scored his first Newcastle goal against Bromley on Sunday.

The 27-year-old has scored just twice in all competitions this season but could thrive in a different environment if given the opportunity.
