Newcastle United may have found a solution for one of their January transfer wishes.
With the January transfer window now less than a week away, clubs across the Premier League are gearing up for what looks set to be a busy month.
It’ll be sporting director Paul Mitchell’s first full transfer window since joining in the summer and he’ll be eager to have his influence reflected over the deals that are done.
Howe wants a striker, winger and goalkeeper in January, with the hope there will also be room for a defender if PSR doesn’t stretch the budget too much, with Antonio Silva high on Newcastle’s list.
James Trafford could join Newcastle but Burnley boss and former Toon player Scott Parker wants Trafford to stay. Elsewhere, Bryan Mbeumo is linked with a move to Tyneside which could cost upwards of £50million.
Now, another Premier League star who nearly joined in the summer is once again on Newcastle’s radar.

Newcastle keeping tabs on Dominic Calvert-Lewin situation
Dominic Calvert-Lewin has been a frequent first-team player for Everton this campaign but the Toffees recent takeover has put his future into question.
The 27-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, and according to TEAMtalk, there is a possibility that he will sign a pre-contract agreement with Serie A side Fiorentina.
There, he’d join the likes of Tammy Abraham and Newcastle target Fikayo Tomori as English players who have moved to Italy.
Calvert-Lewin will be open to pre-contract talks from clubs outside of England from 1st January ahead of his contract expiry.
The report suggests that Newcastle are ‘attentive’ to the situation and would be interested in signing the England international on a free transfer rather than looking to sign him in January.
Newcastle were close to signing Calvert-Lewin, who the Mirror once reported was valued at £100m by Everton in the summer but the Magpies weren’t willing to match his wage demands – which were believed to be well over £100,000 per week.
The report also suggests that West Ham are keen on signing Calvert-Lewin to help them out of their shaky start to the season.
Calvert-Lewin compared to Newcastle forwards
Newcastle signed William Osula from Sheffield United in the summer but is still yet to make a big impact on the Magpies first-team.
Elsewhere, Callum Wilson suffered another injury setback which will keep him out for two months, but star man Alexander Isak has been in red hot form in recent weeks even bagging a hat-trick in Newcastle’s win against Ipswich.
In Calvert-Lewin’s 17 Premier League games this season, he has only netted twice compared to Isak’s 11 goals with one less appearance.
| Appearances | Minutes | Goals | Assists | |
| Dominic Calvert-Lewin | 17 | 1,309 | 2 | 1 |
| Alexander Isak | 16 | 1,294 | 11 | 4 |
| William Osula | 6 | 28 | 0 | 0 |
| Callum Wilson | 4 | 58 | 0 | 0 |
With a striker on Howe’s wishlist, it’s down to Mitchell to decide whether he believes Calvert-Lewin is the right fit for Newcastle in the long term.
