Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Brentford striker Yoane Wissa as a replacement for Callum Wilson who announced his departure earlier this week.

The Champions League is on the horizon, and the Magpies are eager to bolster their squad to give them the best chance of being competitive in the competition.

Newcastle United are set to announce the signing of Anthony Elanga at any point after the winger completed his medical on Tyneside. The focus has now shifted to other areas of the pitch.

It was confirmed that Newcastle are now looking to sign a striker to give Alexander Isak more competition. The decision comes after it was announced that Callum Wilson had left Newcastle to explore free agency, leaving Eddie Howe with just two strikers to pick from in the starting XI.

Newcastle are now linked with a move for Brentford’s Yoane Wissa. The 28-year-old is coming off the back of a sensational season with the Bees, scoring 19 goals in the Premier League. However, he has attracted interest from elsewhere and the Magpies are believed to be one of those parties.

With the search for Wilson’s replacement continuing, a new transfer report has informed Newcastle of how much they will need to pay for Wissa this summer.

Newcastle United told eye-watering Yoane Wissa asking price

Newcastle could not sign Bryan Mbeumo from Brentford, so they have decided to go for the next best thing. Craig Hope told Newcastle fans to ‘keep a close eye’ on Wissa and Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins, who is also believed to be of interest to Howe.

However, it has been revealed the Magpies will not be able to sign Wissa for cheap. In fact, it will cost Newcastle almost as much as they are paying for Elanga to get a deal done.

According to the Standard, Tottenham, who are also interested in signing Wissa, have been told that they must pay £50million for the Congo international, an eye-watering fee given that he only has a year left on his contract.

With Mbeumo joining Manchester United still a possibility, Brentford will not want to lose another one of their star players this summer, so they have decided to slap a huge price tag on him.

Furthermore, there will be some natural concerns over whether Wissa will be keen on being a second-choice striker at Newcastle. Having come off the best season of his career, Wissa will surely want to be a frequent part of the Magpies’ starting XI if he signs, which is unlikely to happen while Isak is on Tyneside.

Alexander Isak’s statistics compared to Newcastle United target Yoane Wissa

Like Wissa, Isak enjoyed the best season of his Premier League career in the 2024/25 campaign, coming second in the top scorer table with 23 goals.

The Swedish star will be the focal point of Newcastle’s first-team squad next season, with the added boost that his international teammate will be a part of it. Elanga and Isak are sure to form a sensational partnership across all competitions, providing something that can get the fans off their seats.

Wissa joining Newcastle would undoubtedly be an added bonus for Howe, who has just William Osula as a backup option to Isak. The talented young Dane impressed in his first season for the Magpies, but Howe did not trust him in any important games or give him a chance to impress in the starting lineup.

Geordie Boot Boys understands that Newcastle are big admirers of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but there is serious interest elsewhere. With one year left on his current deal, Newcastle will be confident they can sign Wissa for much less than the £50m Brentford are looking for, and give Isak a quality backup striker at the peak of his powers, whom he can rely on if there are ever any issues.

With Elanga set to sign, Newcastle’s attentions have been shifted elsewhere, but it remains to be seen when that next deal is done.
