Dominic Calvert-Lewin is not the only striker on Newcastle United’s radar as Eddie Howe sets about adding more depth to his forward line.

With the Anthony Elanga deal almost finalised, Newcastle’s next priority is signing a striker to support Alexander Isak. The Magpies’ need for additions in that position has only intensified since Callum Wilson left the club.

Geordie Boot Boys understand that Newcastle have held talks with Dominic Calvert-Lewin about a move to St James’ Park. He is certainly an option for Howe, while the fact he is available on a free transfer does make him appealing from a financial perspective.

However, the Magpies do have other options that they are considering.

Yoane Wissa becomes a transfer option for Newcastle United

While Newcastle’s pursuit of Bryan Mbeumo failed, they could make a move for his Brentford teammate Yoane Wissa.

That is according to the Daily Mail, who report that Newcastle United have discussed the possibility of signing Wissa during this summer’s transfer window.

The report describes Wissa as a player for Toon fans to ‘keep an eye on’, with the 28-year-old boasting a lot of admirers inside St James’ Park.

It is easy to understand why after the season he had with Brentford. Wissa scored 20 goals in 39 appearances in all competitions, which is the best tally of his career.

Two of those goals actually came against Newcastle United, with Wissa finding the net in a 4-2 win for the Bees in December 2024 and in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.

Wissa also provided five assists last season, with one of those coming against the Magpies too. That was when he won a penalty during a 2-1 win for Newcastle in April 2025.

Yoane Wissa’s contract situation could help Newcastle United

Newcastle United are always looking for value in the transfer market. That is why this summer could be the best time to try and strike a deal for Wissa.

He is entering the final 12 months of his Brentford contract, although they do have the option of extending it for another year. It is a similar situation to Mbeumo, whose Brentford contract could also be extended until 2027.

Even with that extra year, this is the right time for Brentford to sell and make a profit. Wissa’s value will plummet in 12 months, while he will arguably never be as valuable as he is now after a career-best tally of 20 goals.

According to the Standard, Brentford valued Wissa at £40million in January amid interest from Nottingham Forest. However, he remained at the Gtech Community Stadium.

A fee in that region would represent a huge profit for the Bees, who bought him from Lorient for £8.5million in 2021. Thomas Frank told the Premier League’s official website in November 2024 that Wissa has been an ‘unbelievable’ signing, and that is proven by the goals he has scored.

There could be an opportunity for Newcastle United to swoop in, while a move would also give Wissa the opportunity to play in the Champions League. That has to make a move to St James’ Park appealing, even if it would be as understudy to Isak.
