Newcastle United in ‘talks’ to immediately replace Callum Wilson but face major competition

Newcastle United are suddenly in greater need of a striker following confirmation of Callum Wilson’s exit.

The club have announced that Callum Wilson has left the club, with the 33-year-old now a free agent following the expiry of his contract.

Newcastle fans are calling Wilson a club legend, as they wait to see who could replace him at St James’ Park.

Eddie Howe has already tried to do that, only for Newcastle to miss out on Joao Pedro to Chelsea. He would have arrived as competition for Alexander Isak, but has joined Enzo Maresca’s side instead.

Newcastle United discuss signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin

The Magpies are already aiming to sign an alternative, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin back on Howe’s radar.

Like Wilson, Calvert-Lewin is available on a free transfer and is an option that Newcastle United officials are discussing.

That is according to TBR Football’s chief correspondent Graeme Bailey, who has told Geordie Boot Boys that there have been talks between the 28-year-old and Newcastle United over a move to the North East.

“Newcastle have held talks with Calvert-Lewin,” he said.

“They have been the most prevalent. He is looking at his options, and he has plenty of options from all over the world.

“There is more than Newcastle in England who are looking at him. There are four or five teams in the Premier League looking at him from what I am told.”

Signing Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a ‘no-lose situation’ for Newcastle United

Signing a backup striker is going to be extremely difficult, which is why a deal for Calvert-Lewin would make sense.

Newcastle need more depth in attack ahead of their return to the Champions League. They need cover for Alexander Isak.

But that will not be cheap. Pedro nearly cost Newcastle more than £50million, only for him to join Chelsea.

Given his availability and Newcastle’s long-term interest, it is not a surprise to Bailey that the Magpies are considering a deal to sign Calvert-Lewin.

“It should not come as a major surprise,” Bailey added.

“We know Eddie Howe likes him. They need bodies. Newcastle do not have an awful lot of central options, especially now with Callum Wilson leaving.

“With PSR continuing to be a concern, getting a potentially very good Premier League striker for nothing is something that Newcastle are going to consider. It feels like a no-lose situation for Newcastle.”

A deal does make sense for the Magpies, but only if Calvert-Lewin can stay injury free. He has had plenty of fitness problems in recent years, which could hurt his chances of joining Newcastle and replacing Wilson.

But he has options away from Newcastle too, as suitors queue up to strike a deal for the England international.
