Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes has admitted that he is ‘very disappointed’ after the Magpies lost 1-0 to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
After the thumping victory over Paris Saint-Germain, a lot was expected of Newcastle as they welcomed the Bundesliga giants to St James’ Park.
There was a real sense of hope that Toon fans would witness another special night on Tyneside, but it turned out to be more of a reality check.
Felix Nmecha, who Newcastle tried to sign in the summer, scored the only goal of the game, producing a smart finish on the stroke of half time.
It was a much tougher evening for Eddie Howe‘s side, but they did create chances. Gregor Kobel had to make multiple saves throughout the game, while Callum Wilson and Anthony Gordon struck the woodwork.

On another night, Newcastle would have got something. Instead, they fell to their first Champions League defeat of the season and drop from first to third in Group F.
Bruno Guimaraes ‘disappointed’ after Newcastle lose in Champions League
After the game, Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes took to his official Instagram account to deliver his honest verdict on the defeat.
He wrote: “Very disappointed with the score tonight! I think we deserved more! No time to be sad we move on! Howay the lads.”
Bruno’s verdict prompted a reply from Toon co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi.
He commented: “You gave everything, just wasn’t our night. We go again.”
Mehrdad Ghodoussi is right about Champions League defeat
It really wasn’t Newcastle’s night on Wednesday. Small moments went against us, and that is what will cost you at this elite level.
Even for the Dortmund goal, it comes from Anthony Gordon being on the brink of creating a brilliant chance. One challenge from Nico Schlotterbeck later and Dortmund have gone up the other end and scored.
While Newcastle were not at their best, Howe’s side did create enough chances. But it just would not go in, as the Magpies failed to make the most of their home advantage. Bruno may feel as though Newcastle did not deserve to lose, but it simply ‘wasn’t our night’ as Ghodoussi told him.
It is another lesson about playing at this level for Newcastle, who now face two difficult away trips to Germany and France before playing at St James’ Park again in the Champions League.
