Anthony Gordon will love who Eddie Howe is discussing signing for Newcastle United

Newcastle United fans should be excited about the upcoming transfer window.

After being sensible in the last three transfer windows, the Magpies now look to be at the back end of their troubles with PSR. Last summer was disastrous for Eddie Howe who was forced to see players who had bright futures at the club leave to avoid a points deduction.

Elliot Anderson didn’t want to leave Newcastle but has since taken the opportunity to shine at Nottingham Forest with both hands. The 22-year-old will return to his old stomping ground as Forest visits St James’ Park for an important Premier League clash.

Newcastle also sold Yankuba Minteh to Brighton for a near-club record fee. The Gambian international didn’t play a single minute for the Magpies before moving to the South Coast. Alan Shearer named Minteh in his Team of the Week after the 19-year-old scored a brace in Brighton’s 3-0 win against Chelsea last week.

While these transfers still sting, Newcastle United staff know it was for the greater good. The sales throughout the season alongside Newcastle’s £73m PSR boost they will bag in the summer mean that there is much more freedom to spend on players who will immediately improve the squad and can develop under Howe.

A new transfer report has now stated that Newcastle are looking to sign a player who has already won silverware with Toon winger Anthony Gordon.

Newcastle discuss Morgan Gibbs-White transfer internally

Nottingham Forest star Morgan Gibbs-White has enjoyed a fine season in the Premier League, scoring five goals and bagging five assists.

The Midlands side look set to qualify for European football this season following a fantastic start to the season which now sees them sitting third in the league.

According to the Telegraph, Newcastle have discussed a move for Gibbs-White internally alongside several other players like Southampton’s Tyler Dibling and soon-to-be free agent Jonathan David.

The 25-year-old garnered praise from multiple places in the last year. Shearer called Gibbs-White ‘exciting‘ after a successful 2023/24 campaign.

Newcastle wanted Gibbs-White in 2024 with reports claiming it would cost the Magpies £42.5m to pry him from Forest’s clutches. Gibbs-White has already had a taste of what winning silverware is like alongside a Newcastle star. He won the under-21s European Championship with Gordon and Newcastle target James Trafford in 2023.

Morgan Gibbs-White has something Eddie Howe loves at Newcastle

Signing Gibbs-White would immediately give Newcastle more quality and take a player away from a rival. But what Howe will love most about Gibbs-White is his versatility.

The 25-year-old can play as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder and winger. England under-21s boss Lee Carsley even played him as a striker during their European Championship-winning campaign.

Newcastle have several versatile players within their ranks including Lewis Hall who is predominantly a left-back but played as a midfielder during his youth career.

Versatility is something prominent within Newcastle’s defence as well – almost every player can move into a different position where required. Emil Krafth, who just signed a new deal at Newcastle, can play as a right-back and central defender whereas Dan Burn can easily play as a left-back.

Gibbs-White’s versatility would give Newcastle more dynamism and scope to improve positions that are in more desperate need of bodies.
