Newcastle United fans are expecting a better transfer window after disappointment this season.

Sporting director Paul Mitchell has been up against it since moving to Tyneside in July 2024.

He came to the club in a time of mourning – two young players had just left the club to adhere to the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules which have turned out to play a big part in Newcastle United in the last 12 months.

The Magpies have not signed a first-team player aside from Lewis Hall since the 2023 summer window. It can be put down to lucrative spending in previous seasons but fans did not expect their club to be held back to suddenly.

After a year of struggling, Newcastle should now be in a position to spend more freely in the summer thanks to their heavy spending from three years ago dropping off the FFP cycle. It did not feel like the Magpies had a set transfer plan while Dan Ashworth was at the club.

Mitchell said Newcastle’s spending was ‘not fit for purpose’ before he arrived and has since changed their approach to recruitment.

With fans expecting expenditure in the summer, it has now been revealed what type of player Mitchell will be targeting.

Paul Mitchell won’t sign big names at Newcastle

Every decision that Newcastle make, whether it’s a signing or a new contract has to consider PSR. Thankfully, Mitchell’s clever business in January coupled with Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh’s exits mean that there is a much bigger pot for the club to spend from.

There are several players out of contract this summer, including Callum Wilson who has been with the club since 2020. Their departures give Mitchell more headroom to offer new contracts to the likes of Alexander Isak when the time comes.

According to the Telegraph, it could be the most exciting summer of recruitment since the takeover in 2021. Newcastle are looking at players to improve them in every position. However, the main focus will be on signing young talent rather than big names.

Throughout the January transfer window, it was common knowledge that Mitchell wants Newcastle to sign youth from abroad. The report has now revealed exactly why that is the case.

After coming close to breaching PSR rules in the summer, club officials accepted that they could not put themselves in that sort of position again. So Newcastle will instead look for players whose value will increase after Howe has worked his magic on them. Howe has been known for developing players into Premier League powerhouses. Joelinton looked like a hopeless wanderer before Howe arrived – he’s not a feared midfielder.

Mitchell’s Newcastle strategy already put into practice

Mitchell has already been hard at work trying to make changes at the club for the better. His strategy has already been put to use.

In January, Newcastle welcomed two new youth players to the club. Kyle Fitzgerald followed in Alex Murphy’s footsteps by joining the Magpies from Galway United. The 18-year-old made his debut for Newcastle’s under-18s in a 0-0 draw with Manchester United’s youth side on Saturday.

In regards to the summer, Newcastle are set to beat Real Madrid to Antonio Cordero, who plays for Segunda Division side Malaga. The 18-year-old has nine goal involvements in the league so far this season.

Reports have claimed that Cordero wants to join Newcastle in the summer having held talks with Mitchell in January.

Elsewhere, Newcastle signed Baran Yildiz from Turkish second-tier side Genclerbirligi. The 18-year-old was quietly included in the Magpies Premier League squad for the remainder of the season.
