Newcastle United want to sign Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford in the summer transfer window.

The 22-year-old has been on Newcastle United’s radar since the summer when it looked like they were going to sign him.

Newcastle’s move for James Trafford collapsed much to the dismay of fans who thought the club had a new long-term shot-stopper. It is believed that Trafford wants to join Newcastle in the summer – sporting director Paul Mitchell has a plan in place to get the deal done in 2025.

Trafford has been sensational for Burnley this season. The Championship side are three points off an automatic promotion place and are unbeaten in their last 19 league games.

Trafford saved two penalties against Sunderland in January, much to the delight of Newcastle fans. The 22-year-old wasted time to put Wilson Isidor off for both spot kicks.

As Burnley continues their unbeaten run, Trafford has earned more fans after reaching a milestone no other Championship goalkeeper has done before.

Newcastle target James Trafford sets clean sheets record

Burnley are enjoying life under manager and former Newcastle man Scott Parker. The 44-year-old has added some much-needed stability to Burnley’s back line and could guide them back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

As well as the unbeaten run, Burnley became the first team in Championship history to keep 10 consecutive clean sheets in the league.

Trafford has been between the sticks for those games, so his 910 minutes without conceding is the longest without conceding in Championship history.

Parker is reluctant to sell Trafford to Newcastle and is eager to keep him at Burnley if they return to the Premier League. Trafford’s form has been recognised throughout the country, including by England Manager Thomas Tuchel.

The Three Lions head coach will name his first squad in March and Tuchel is tipped to pick Trafford as a reward for his fine form.

James Trafford stats compared to Newcastle goalkeepers

Newcastle have five senior goalkeepers on the books, three of which have not made a single Premier League appearance his season.

Mark Gillespie and John Ruddy are out of contract at the end of the season and there is no indication that they will stay on for another year.

Trafford, who has only conceded nine goals this season, trumps both Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka for clean sheets and saves this season.

Dubravka looked set to leave Newcastle in January and even had an emotional moment with Toon fans at the Emirates Stadium after the win against Arsenal in the Carabao Cup.

With Dubravka’s contract also out of contract at the end of the season, Trafford looks to be the most likely replacement.
