Newcastle United’s frustrating weekend was made even worse by Yankuba Minteh’s outstanding performance for Brighton.
Eddie Howe cut a frustrated figure as he watched Newcastle United lose 4-0 to Manchester City on Saturday afternoon.
It was easily one of the worst performances of the season and acted as a humble reminder that fresh faces will be needed in the summer.
In recent windows, Newcastle’s squad has only become weaker. Over the winter, Miguel Almiron left for MLS and Lloyd Kelly joined Juventus on loan.
Before that, Howe was forced to sell Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson to help Newcastle avoid a PSR breach. The two youngsters were highly rated around St James’ Park but the Magpies had to raise cash somehow.

Former Newcastle star Yankuba Minteh stars vs Chelsea
Jamie Carragher suggested Newcastle would regret selling Minteh, and that has absolutely proven to be the case.
Minteh was outstanding against Chelsea on Friday evening, with the 20-year-old scoring twice from right wing-back in a 3-0 stomp.
Minteh’s pace and power were praised after the win, and it only rubs salt into Newcastle’s wounds given that the Magpies are currently on the lookout for a new winger.
Newcastle legend Alan Shearer has now joined in showering Yankuba Minteh with praise by including him in his latest Premier League Team of the Week.
Shearer went for an extremely bizarre 2-2-3-3 formation in his side, with Minteh starring at… right wing?
Alongside his selection, Shearer wrote: “The best player on the pitch against Chelsea, scoring twice in an impressive victory for the Seagulls.”
Newcastle United have done well to avoid PSR repeat
The last few transfer windows have been extremely frustrating for Newcastle fans, but hopefully that trend will stop in the summer.
Newcastle will bank a £73m PSR boost in the summer, which should allow Paul Mitchell to finally land some new signings for Howe’s squad.
Howe has made it clear that he never wants to be in a position again where he is forced to sell, and being patient over the winter has put the club in a much better financial position.

Newcastle did not want to lose Minteh and it seems like the club will live to regret that deal after his brilliant start at Brighton.
But Newcastle’s aim now is to try and replicate the Minteh deal by targeting exciting young talent around Europe who will grow into superstars at St James’ Park.
