Alan Shearer has commented on speculation surrounding Alexander Isak’s future at Newcastle United.

After a brilliant 2024/25 campaign and an overarching confidence that he will stay at the club, Alexander Isak dropped a bombshell by announcing his intent to explore his options this summer.

Newcastle United fans were shocked by Isak’s intentions, with many believing that he would not leave until 2026. However, Liverpool are seriously interested in Isak, and have already begun work to bring him to Merseyside.

After an informal approach in July, Liverpool made a £110million offer for Isak, which was quickly turned down by Newcastle. Eddie Howe was not even aware of the bid before it had been rejected, but it is clear that the club will need a lot more for their star striker.

Liverpool are preparing a second bid for Isak, but it remains to be seen how much that figure will be. With it looking more likely that Isak will leave Newcastle this summer, club legend Alan Shearer has given his honest verdict on the whole transfer saga.

Alan Shearer surprised at Alexander Isak’s intent to leave Newcastle United this summer

Howe will not allow Isak back to training immediately, with the 47-year-old claiming the Swede needs to earn the right to come back into the group after all the speculation and missed games. However, it may be too little, too late for Isak, who has already made his bed.

Newcastle legend Shearer looked disappointed when asked about the situation on the Rest is Football podcast, but he has admitted that the sale of Isak could happen this summer if the price is right.

“Yeah, I thought he might have stayed for another season, and then this would’ve happened next summer,” Shearer said.

“I said it last week, it is what it is. If he can’t be persuaded to stay, then if someone offered Newcastle what they want, then they’ve got to take that, because ultimately, you just say ‘thank you very much for the great memories you’ve given us, off you go’.

“I’m not angry at all towards him, I understand how football works,” Shearer added. “I know what happens in and around the game. I probably understand his mentality. Do I like it? Do I understand it? Probably two different things, but I know what football’s about and I know how it works.

“Obviously Liverpool have been into him or his agent. I just thought it might have happened next year, and if it really is impossible for Eddie to turn him around and he says no, and it sounds like that is the case, you get your big money for him. Whoever’s prepared to pay that and you get the other people in beforehand and then you move on.

“As I said, no individual is bigger than any football club and if he doesn’t want to be there, fine. Get what you can and get him out and say thanks very much for the memories, off you go.”

Newcastle United must sign Alexander Isak’s replacement imminently

The situation on Tyneside is becoming very dire, and Newcastle are at risk of failure if it is not resolved quickly.

In an ideal world, Isak will get over his recent feelings and be brought back into training ahead of this weekend’s pre-season games. However, it is highly unlikely that will happen, and Isak’s replacement needs to be found.

Newcastle are in talks with RB Leipzig for Benjamin Sesko, with the Bundesliga side already rejecting an approach for the striker. Manchester United are also interested in Sesko, but reports suggest the final decision on which club he joins is down to him, so there is no guarantee he will join even if a bid is accepted.

Elsewhere, Newcastle remain interested in Ollie Watkins, who looks ready to leave Aston Villa this summer. The 29-year-old scored 16 Premier League goals and appeared in the Champions League last season, so he would be a great addition to the squad if Isak leaves.
