Paul Mitchell has a lot of work to do at Newcastle United as the January transfer window opens.
Since joining in July, Mitchell has implemented his transfer strategy, opting to sign younger players from overseas – hoping Toon boss Eddie Howe can work his magic and develop them as he has done with the likes of Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak.
Howe has given Mitchell his transfer wishlist – it’s up to him to now deliver the striker, winger and goalkeeper he wants. A winger is more urgently needed with Miguel Almiron’s exit looming, leaving just Jacob Murphy the only natural right winger in Newcastle’s first-team squad.
The Magpies are keen to sign a striker in January to provide better competition to Isak – the Swede has been in red-hot form in recent weeks but lacks a quality replacement should anything happen to him.
Newcastle signed William Osula in the summer but his appearances haven’t given Howe much hope that he’s the answer to any problems up front. Callum Wilson is also out for several weeks with a hamstring issue, with his contract expiring in the summer it’s time for Mitchell to think about a future without the 32-year-old.
While the Magpies had their eye on one player who has set the Bundesliga alight this season, recent comments now suggest Mitchell should begin looking elsewhere.
Omar Marmoush quashes exit rumours amid Newcastle interest
The Egyptian has been in excellent form this season, his 13 Bundesliga goals can only be beaten by Harry Kane. Across all competitions, Marmoush has played a part in 30 goals so far this season including a brace and an assist against Bayern Munich.
Eintracht Frankfurt currently sit third in the Bundesliga, albeit nine points off league leaders Bayern.
Marmoush is a Newcastle target who would be perfect to either partner or replace Isak, but any talk of an exit could be put to bed after his words in an interview with SportsBild.
“There’s always a lot of speculation on the outside. But I don’t actually have a particular dream goal,” Marmoush said.
“What I can promise the fans is that I will give my all for Eintracht in every game. I am not thinking about a transfer. I am living in the here and now and enjoying my time in Frankfurt.
“Eintracht believed in me and put their trust in me. I want to repay that trust with good performances and goals. What happens in the distant future, however, doesn’t interest me. I want to continue to do my best so that at the end of the season we can say as a team: We have achieved something big.”
Newcastle looking at other strikers
Mitchell isn’t short of options in January as Newcastle looks to improve on their current Premier League position following a shaky start to the season.

Newcastle are keeping tabs on Everton’s Dominic Calvert-Lewin who is out of contract at the end of the season. The Magpies nearly signed the 27-year-old in the summer but were put off by his wage demands.
Atalanta forward Charles De Ketelaere is a Newcastle target, the Belgian international has 10 Serie A goal involvements so far this season.
Mitchell is keen on signing from abroad, so the latter looks to be the more likely out of the two.
