Tino Livramento hailed one Newcastle United star as a ‘big’ reason why he signed for £32m in 2023

On August 8 2023, Newcastle United announced the signing of Tino Livramento from Southampton for a fee of £32million, and what a signing he has been.

There was a lot of scepticism when the young defender joined two years ago. Tino Livramento had just returned from an ACL injury and had barely featured for Southampton before their relegation to the Championship.

However, Eddie Howe saw something in Livramento and decided to go big and sign him for £32million, with add-ons taking the deal to around £40million later down the line.

Two years on, and it is safe to say that the right-back has been a huge success on Tyneside, helping the Magpies win their first major trophy since 1969 and stepping up to play out of position and have a big part in qualifying for the Champions League.

Livramento also won the European Championship with England’s Under-21s, and has already been capped at senior level for the Three Lions. With Livramento celebrating two years as a Newcastle player, we look back at who he claims was a big reason why the move was so attractive to him.

Tino Livramento hailed Kieran Trippier upon signing for Newcastle United

Kieran Trippier was Newcastle’s first signing of the new era on Tyneside. He joined the club in January 2022 when the Magpies were in the relegation zone, but helped them claw their way out and push further up the Premier League table.

Now, Trippier is widely regarded as one of Newcastle’s best-ever full-backs and has a strong argument for being considered as the best in the club’s history. The former England international is now 34 and is nearing the end of his playing career. However, it is clear that Trippier can work as a role model for the younger defenders on Tyneside.

Lewis Hall praised Trippier’s influence at Newcastle, and fans can also thank him for being a reason why Livramento was so eager to join two years ago.

In his first interview with newcastleunited.com, Livramento said: “I’m really excited to have signed for Newcastle United and I’m looking forward to playing in front of the fans.

“I was here for the games over the weekend; even though they were friendlies, there were so many fans and they were still so loud so I can’t wait to see what it feels like to play in front of them in a Premier League or Champions League game.

“The way the manager plays football is really attractive and I feel like it suits me as a player. And with how well the team did last season, the trajectory that we’re on now, I’m just looking forward to being a part of that.

“And to be able to learn from Kieran Trippier is another big thing for me; hopefully he teaches me how to become a better player and a better full-back.”

Newcastle United were right not to sell Kieran Trippier in 2024

Trippier will always be seen as a success on Tyneside. His contributions over the years will never be forgotten, even after he leaves the club. The 34-year-old is out of contract at the end of the season, so the 2025/26 campaign could be his last for the Magpies.

His time at Newcastle could have ended much sooner, however, with reports in 2024 confirming that Bayern Munich had made an offer for Trippier. The bid was rejected by Newcastle, who had no interest in selling the defender at the time.

While some fans thought Howe was silly not to accept the offer, the decision has ended up being a great one, as Trippier was a big part of the squad last season after Hall’s injury. He started in the Carabao Cup final and helped the Magpies qualify for the Champions League for a second time in three seasons.

Whatever happens with Trippier going forward, fans will always remember him as the first player who took a chance on the club, and has left it in safe hands thanks to his contributions to their younger players.
