‘It’s very obvious…’ Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle United takeover prediction six years ago has been spot on

Kevin Keegan spoke honestly about how Newcastle United can return to the top of English football.

That has been the aim at St James’ Park since the PIF takeover was completed in 2021. That was relayed in the summer when Paul Mitchell aimed to be “best in class” in every department.

Former owner Mike Ashley was blamed for Newcastle’s struggles financially, with the Magpies falling well behind their rivals in terms of revenue, especially from sponsorships and commercial sources.

However, Newcastle’s commercial income has skyrocketed in their latest accounts, while revenue from matchday and broadcast also increased. Newcastle announced revenue of £320m.

On the pitch, Eddie Howe is also making great progress with Newcastle in the 2025 Carabao Cup final while also challenging for a Champions League qualification spot.

The future looks bright for Newcastle, and Kevin Keegan always knew it was only a matter of time.

What Kevin Keegan said about Newcastle United in 2019

Keegan has been critical of Ashley and his ownership of the team, and back in 2019 he suggested that a takeover was needed to bring Newcastle back to the top. His prediction turned out to be spot on.

“It’s very obvious isn’t it, someone else has to take this club and realise what it is and see it,” Keegan said.

“Anyone should see it as a massive opportunity. What would it be like to win something here? It’s not impossible, we nearly got there.

“So, why not someone new come in, maybe take two or three years to build. Maybe need a new owner, I certainly think they will.

“And some investment, but when you get 50,000 every week and the TV money, you should be able to invest. I think this club could come back.”

Will Kevin Keegan return to St James’ Park?

There were claims earlier this season that Keegan could return to St James’ Park for the first time since his second stint as manager ended in 2008.

Unfortunately, that is yet to happen and it has been claimed that Keegan doesn’t plan on returning until Newcastle lift silverware.

Next week, Newcastle have the chance to end their 70-year trophy drought when they face Liverpool at Wembley.

Hope has been drained from Newcastle fans over the last week or two with Anthony Gordon suspended and players dropping to injury.

But Keegan is right, there is no reason why Newcastle cannot win something and return to the top.

Fan group Wor Flags were keen to bring Keegan back, and if Newcastle do go on to win silverware, it would be great to welcome the now 74-year-old back to St James’ Park.
