Newcastle United fans have finally heard from new sporting director Paul Mitchell.

The Magpies announced Paul Mitchell as Dan Ashworth’s replacement on July 4th, and news of his arrival delighted Newcastle United supporters.

His appointment came completely out of the blue, with Newcastle officials happy they kept talk of Mitchell joining out of the media. It was even kept secret from Eddie Howe, who did not find out until the day before the announcement.

Mitchell is now Newcastle’s sporting director, and is tasked with leading the football operations at the club. He joins an elite team of officials, as PIF aim to make the Magpies the biggest club in the world.

While that will depend on what happens on the pitch, Mitchell has a huge role in helping Newcastle United achieve its goals. Mitchell is in charge of recruitment, and must create paths for players to rise through ranks, from the youth team to senior level.

Paul Mitchell speaks for the first time as Newcastle’s sporting director

It is a big job for Mitchell, and he has presented his vision for Newcastle United in his first interview since becoming sporting director on Tyneside.

He is out in Germany at Adidas HQ, and has spoke to NUFC TV about what is role will be at St James’ Park. Mitchell also detailed why he decided to join Newcastle United, having taken the place of Dan Ashworth following his departure for Manchester United.

Fans delighted with what Paul Mitchell had to say

It was an impressive first interview as Newcastle United’s sporting director. Mitchell spoke with confidence and authority, and supporters are very excited to see what the future holds under his guidance.

The Toon Army have reacted very positively about Mitchell’s interview on X (formally known as Twitter), and are really pleased with the club’s communication. This comes in the same week that CEO Darren Eales also addressed supporters.

On Mitchell’s first interview, one Newcastle fan posted on X: “What an excellent interview – speaks very well and clearly knows his stuff. PSR has cleared and we have a clear field to invest across the club… Let’s Go.”

Another fan was impressed with Mitchell’s words, commenting: “Comes across brilliantly. Supremely confident in this guy.”

“Best in class. What a great inspiring interview. Howay the lads,” tweeted a third Newcastle supporter.

This fan can see exactly why Newcastle wanted to appoint Mitchell, writing: “What an interview that is – and you can see why we wanted him so badly. High performance – high intelligence and what drive. This fills me with a lot of confidence for the next phase.”

Meanwhile, another fan thinks he is definitely an upgrade on Ashworth, posting: “Really impressive interview. Chuffed we’ve appointed him and instantly upgraded the sporting director position. He’s clearly a much better fit for us.”

Mitchell’s interview has got Toon fans dreaming about what is to come, with this fan summing it up: “Speaks so well! Makes me excited for the future, big season ahead.”

Mitchell must now put his words into action at Newcastle

It sounds like the future will be extremely bright under Mitchell. But he will be judged on his results, rather than his words.

While Mitchell’s impact at St James’ Park will be seen over multiple years, he has an immediate chance to make a difference.

Newcastle are yet to make a proper splash in the summer transfer market, with the Magpies having a £100million transfer budget. That will mainly go towards a winger and a centre-back, with Eddie Howe keen to have two new signings before the pre-season trip to Japan.

That presents Mitchell with an early challenge, and it is up to him to provide Howe with the players he needs to get Newcastle United back into Europe.

Hopefully he does that, and they can build a strong working relationship on Tyneside. However, that may largely depend on whether or not Eddie Howe replaces Gareth Southgate and becomes England manager.
