Newcastle United will be without Anthony Gordon in the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.
The 24-year-old was sent off during Newcastle’s loss against Brighton, after he pushed Jan Paul van Hecke in the back of the head.
Anthony Gordon is now suspended, and will serve a three-game ban. That includes the Carabao Cup final against Liverpool.
It is a devastating blow, but there had been slight hope that the decision could be overturned. Newcastle could appeal Gordon’s red, despite most pundits insisting that the suspension would be upheld.
With that in mind, Sky Sports reporter Keith Downie has confirmed that Newcastle will not appeal Gordon’s sending off and he will therefore miss the Magpies’ next three games.
Toon fans react to Newcastle United’s Anthony Gordon decision
Newcastle are probably wise not to appeal the Gordon red card.
It was extremely unlikely that the decision would be overturned, and an appeal would have risked him receiving a longer ban.
With that in mind, some Newcastle fans on social media agree with the club’s Gordon decision.
One Newcastle supporter wrote on X: “Makes sense, little to no chance of getting it overturned. Got to go with what we have. Barnes or Joelinton on that left.”
“Yeah fair enough, we were never getting that overturned,” posted a second Newcastle fan.
This fan summed up the situation, writing: “Correct decision. Was never ever going to get overturned.”
However, there are others who think it was worth taking the risk given the looming cup final.
One Toon supporter asked: “What harm will it do if you appeal? No Gordon, no Lewis Hall. Liverpool must be licking their lips. Always something towards us when we get to a good point.”
Another member of the Toon Army wrote: “Well this has been a fun 10mins hasn’t it. First Hall ruled out and now Gordon. Not that an appeal would have won just thought they would have tried. What’s the worst that could happen four games instead of three.”
“Why wouldn’t you at least try? We have nothing to lose at this point,” pondered this Newcastle fan.
Silence from Anthony Gordon after ‘stupid’ red card
It has been a brutal few days for Newcastle United, whose Carabao Cup final plans are in tatters.

Gordon is ruled out, while Lewis Hall is injured for the final. He has an ankle issue and will not be fit in time for Wembley.
The Magpies have lost their entire left-hand side, which is a major problem for Eddie Howe.
The Newcastle United manager will need to make alternative plans, while fans wait to see whether or not Gordon will comment on his sending off.
The winger has been silent since the Brighton defeat, and it will be interesting to see if he speaks out now that his suspension is confirmed.
Unfortunately, the England international simply needs to hold his hands up and admit he made a mistake. Alan Shearer called Gordon’s red card ‘stupid’, and that is exactly what it was.
