Newcastle United made six senior signings during the summer transfer window, but Eddie Howe should consider handing out new deals to star players.

The last few months have been a rollercoaster on Tyneside. Alexander Isak’s record move to Liverpool followed Champions League qualification and a number of rejections from top targets.

However, Newcastle United have come out of the transfer window as a much stronger side, despite losing the striker who scored 23 Premier League goals last season.

With the transfer window closed, Eddie Howe and his wider team should now take the time to assess who needs a new deal this summer. Recent reports have stated that Newcastle are in contract talks with Tino Livramento and could soon enter discussions with Sandro Tonali and Sven Botman over new deals.

The likes of Dan Burn and Anthony Gordon have recently signed new deals on Tyneside, but many others are deserving of a pay rise, including the following three stars.

Fabian Schar

Despite being 33, Fabian Schar is still undoubtedly Newcastle’s Mr Reliable. While Malick Thiaw joined Newcastle during the summer transfer window, Howe has still put his faith in Schar for important games against Liverpool and Aston Villa.

Schar has developed a sensational partnership with Burn on Tyneside, with the pair playing a big part in Champions League qualification and the historic Carabao Cup win in March.

The Switzerland international’s contract runs out next summer, with Howe and co opting against including an option for an extra year in the new deal Schar signed in April.

It is clear that Schar is still a key part of Newcastle’s first-team squad and should be handed a new deal accordingly. Having made 232 club appearances after being signed by Rafa Benitez in 2018, Schar may well be recognised as the best £3m ever spent in the Premier League.

Jacob Murphy

After his drab start to life on Tyneside, very few could have predicted how important Jacob Murphy would become last season. Now 30, the winger registered his best-ever season in the Premier League, scoring eight goals and providing 12 assists.

While Murphy has lost his place in the starting XI to new signing Anthony Elanga, he still has a big part to play in what is a very busy 2025/26 season. Champions League football and a hopeful cup run will still see Murphy playing many games throughout the campaign whenever Elanga needs a rest.

It has been four years since Murphy signed a new contract with Newcastle, a six-year extension keeping him at the club until 2027.

Earlier this year, Murphy signed with agency Wasserman, suggesting that a new deal could be on the way for him. The Englishman currently earns £35,000-a-week, but his form last season could see him earning much more.

Bruno Guimaraes

Last, but by no means least, it is Newcastle’s captain, fantastic Bruno Guimaraes. The Brazilian has done an exceptional job since being appointed club captain last term, guiding the Magpies to the Carabao Cup win.

Guimaraes is an individual who has become engrossed with the passion of Newcastle as a club and a city – somebody who just gets it. Many fans would love to see the midfielder end his career on Tyneside, and a new contract would take him closer to that.

Having signed a lucrative contract extension in 2023, Guimaraes has just under three years left on his current deal. However, Howe will surely be keen to get him tied down to a new contract with a considerably longer length.

Guimaraes wants to win the Premier League, and while fans hope that could come soon, the Brazilian may have to wait a little bit longer before winning the big one.
