Fabian Lukas Schar is a veteran centre-back who has become a legend at Newcastle after years of service.

Schar’s football career began with his hometown club FC Wil, but his performances soon earned him interest from Swiss giants FC Basel, where he enjoyed great success with three league title triumphs.

Schar then travelled Europe, rocking up at German side Hoffenheim and joining Deportivo La Coruna in 2017.

The Spanish club were relegated from La Liga and Newcastle swooped in to pay his £3m buy-out clause in a deal that would turn out to be one of their smartest transfers in modern times.

Schar has been a reliable rock in the heart of Newcastle’s defence ever since. He was the shining light in some dark years and continues to star even when millions have been spent on players.
