Newcastle United are looking to tie their key players down to new contracts after the Alexander Isak debacle.
Isak was disappointed he wasn’t offered a new contract at Newcastle in 2024, which partly explained his desire to force through a move to Liverpool.
Now, Isak’s move to Liverpool has been confirmed. The striker leaves Newcastle under a cloud and the manner in which the club caved was alarming.
Indeed, Newcastle lowered their asking price for Isak, which appears to have helped facilitate his move to Anfield.
It seems unlikely that Isak’s head wouldn’t have been turned even if he did sign a new deal in 2024. To suggest a move to a club like Liverpool wouldn’t appeal because he already penned a new contract seems somewhat foolish.
Still, it seems Newcastle are looking to avoid a similar situation unfolding again.
- Who is Sandro Tonali? Say salve to Newcastle United’s Italian midfield maestro

Sandro Tonali and Sven Botman in line for new Newcastle United contracts
According to iNews, the club are willing to offer both Sven Botman and Sandro Tonali new deals.
Tonali was linked with a move back to Italy earlier this summer and his current deal expires in the summer of 2028.
Botman, meanwhile, has been linked with both Paris Saint-Germain and Bayer Leverkusen and will currently be out of contract in 2027.
The report also again confirms that Newcastle are in talks with Tino Livramento over an improved new deal. The England international was linked with a move to Manchester City earlier this summer.
Livramento is keen to sign a new Newcastle contract, with his current deal set to expire in 2028.

Sandro Tonali is the best signing Newcastle United could make
Newcastle know there is transfer interest in Tonali, who is arguably now the club’s star player following Isak’s exit.
The Italian international is a brilliant player and will likely attract interest next summer too.
Tonali was not interested in leaving Newcastle this summer but, as we’ve seen with Isak, things can change.
With that in mind, Newcastle would be wise to reward him with a new deal. The Isak money needs to be spent on keeping their current players happy just as much as it needs to help fund new signings.
There’s no suggestion that Tonali would ever force an exit like Isak did, but Newcastle need to do all they can to safeguard themselves against it happening.
