Opinion: Chelsea's bid for Gordon could help Newcastle get Hudson-Odoi or Pulisic

Chelsea have reportedly made a bid for Newcastle United target Anthony Gordon.

That’s according to TalkSPORT, who state that Everton are considering an approach from Chelsea worth more than £40million.

The 21-year-old has suddenly emerged as a target for Thomas Tuchel’s side, which could be bad news for Newcastle.

The Magpies have reportedly been considering a fresh move for Gordon, having had a £35million offer rejected earlier in the window.

Now Chelsea have put even more money on the table, and look set to blow Eddie Howe’s side out of the water.

However, if Gordon does go to Chelsea, it could actually end up benefitting Newcastle.

Newcastle want two Chelsea wingers

As previously stated, Newcastle are reportedly interested in Gordon. The Magpies are in the market for a winger, and Saturday’s performance against Brighton proved why.

We need more options in attack, particularly out wide. That’s why multiple wingers have been linked with moves to St James’ Park.

While talk of Chelsea moving for Gordon looks set to scupper our attempts to sign him, it could lead us to someone else.

As well as Gordon, Newcastle have been linked with two wingers from Chelsea: Callum Hudson-Odoi and Christian Pulisic. It has been claimed that the Magpies could move for both players.

Hudson-Odoi is reportedly keen to leave Chelsea, while Pulisic is someone who Dan Ashworth will consider if he becomes available. That’s a possibility given that the £58million man hasn’t started either of Chelsea’s games so far.

And a move for Gordon is only going to push the current Chelsea duo further down the pecking order. It could be the catalyst for making Pulisic’s exit a possibility, and he’s someone who can transform Newcastle on and off the pitch.

As for Hudson-Odoi, his mind seems to be made up. But a deal for Gordon should give Chelsea the green light to sell the ‘very talented‘ 21-year-old. He’s a man in demand though, with as many as 20 teams keen to take him away from Stamford Bridge.

Talk of Newcastle being interested in Gordon wasn’t met with delight from Toon fans. Now he could be on the way to Chelsea, which could give us the opportunity to land a much more popular winger.
