The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has suggested that Newcastle United could make a move for Chelsea’s Callum Hudson-Odoi later this summer.

Eddie Howe’s side are looking to add attacking reinforcements before the transfer window closes. A striker and a right winger is wanted.

The Magpies need to be savvy with their transfer budget, as they attempt to manoeuvre the tricky waters of financial fair play in the coming years.

That’s why the loan market could come into play later in the window, and Hudson-Odoi could be a player of interest.

Newcastle ‘might explore’ Hudson-Odoi loan bid

Waugh spoke about Newcastle current transfer plans on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, and was asked about the club possibly trying to sign someone like Christian Pulisic from Chelsea.

He played down those suggestions, before hinting at an alternative option.

“But late in the window if they come to a stage where they’re going to try sign players on loan and someone like Pulisic becomes available, it wouldn’t surprise me,” he said.

“Although I think someone like Hudson-Odoi – he’s someone on loan later in the window – that’s something Newcastle might explore.”

A move for Hudson-Odoi would be very exciting

Newcastle are looking to sign talented young players who have a bright future, and Hudson-Odoi certainly falls into that category.

He’s a player who has been on the cusp of becoming a real star. However, he has perhaps been hindered by limited opportunities at Chelsea. Injury disrupted him during the previous campaign, but he’s fit now ahead of the new season.

However, it’s unclear whether or not he has a role to play at Chelsea. They have just signed Raheem Sterling from Manchester City, which could impact his chances of playing.

A loan move for the 21-year-old would certainly be exciting. He’s a player who could thrive at St James’ Park. Plus, a temporary deal might suit Newcastle better amid their struggles to sign Moussa Diaby.

However, it would impact our pursuit of Armando Broja. He’s another Chelsea player we are interested in, but Premier League rules mean you can only sign one player per club on loan.

If Newcastle were to sign both, at least one would have to be a permanent deal.

Hudson-Odoi has been linked with a move to Newcastle, and a potential loan attempt later in the window would certainly entice Toon supporters.
