Lyon's Lucas Paqueta clause could be delaying Newcastle bid - opinion

Lucas Paqueta to Newcastle United is not likely right now.

That is the view of the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who believes the Magpies’ priorities lie elsewhere. That makes sense given the positions Eddie Howe wants to improve this summer.

While a club record deal for Paqueta would certainly turn heads and keep Bruno Guimaraes smiling, it probably isn’t the best use of our transfer budget.

The Times claimed last month that Newcastle could move for the £50million-rated midfielder, but that doesn’t feel likely at this moment in time. Fabrizio Romano claims that we are yet to make a bid for the 24-year-old.

The Magpies are currently in the process of completing deals for Sven Botman and Hugo Ekitike. And perhaps the former could be influencing Newcastle’s current Paqueta position.

Lucas Paqueta sell-on clause would help AC Milan

Newcastle are reportedly hoping to complete a deal for Botman this week, who is also a target for AC Milan.

A move to the Serie A champions must be massively appealing, but they are yet to have a bid accepted by Lille. Milan are currently in the midst of a takeover, which is delaying their attempts to land Botman.

So what does this have to do with Paqueta? Well, Lyon bought the Brazilian from AC Milan, with a sell-on clause included in the deal. The Italian side will earn 15% of any fee Lyon receive, which might be why Newcastle are yet to make a bid for Paqueta.

If they pay Lyon big money for him, AC Milan are going to benefit financially. Then they might be in a position to satisfy Lille’s demands for Botman. They’ll then be able to sign the 22-year-old, leaving Eddie Howe scrambling for an alternative centre-back.

Of course, it’s unknown whether or not Paqueta’s sell-on clause has factored into Newcastle’s thinking.

Whether it’s gamesmanship or not, a move for Paqueta does feel unlikely. But it would make sense to delay any deal until after the Botman saga reaches a conclusion.

The defender is one of Newcastle’s top summer targets. Getting him ahead of AC Milan would be a huge deal, so handing the Italian side a financial boost at this crucial time would be particularly foolish.
