Signing Lucas Paqueta for £50m could put Newcastle under real pressure - opinion

Newcastle United are really trying to sign Lucas Paqueta this summer.

The Magpies failed to land him in January for £34million, but will reportedly make a fresh attempt to bring him to St James’ Park.

The Times have reported that Newcastle are prepared to break their transfer record on Paqueta, who could cost £50million.

Signing the Brazil international would be huge for the club. He would be another statement signing by the new owners, and it would also please his good friend and Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes.

However, it’s a deal that could also put Newcastle under some pressure in terms of outgoings.

Budget reports suggest Newcastle will need to recoup a lot of money if they sign Lucas Paqueta

While we have incredibly wealthy owners, that doesn’t mean the club are in a position to spend whatever money they want. Financial fair play limitations will impact how much money Newcastle invest in the squad this summer.

There have been reports for a few months now that the Magpies won’t spend mega money when the transfer window opens.

The Telegraph claimed in March that Eddie Howe will have around £60million to spend, and the Daily Mail backed up those claims this week.

Of course, that figure can be boosted by player sales. There are multiple members of the current Toon squad who could leave the club this summer.

If Newcastle sign Paqueta for £50million, they will suddenly be under a lot of pressure to sell, and sell as high as possible. Sadly there’s no guarantee that Newcastle will get decent money for the likes of Matt Ritchie, Ciaran Clark and Dwight Gayle. They are among the players who could depart this summer.

A deal for the Brazilian would leave Howe with £10million of his original budget. And that’s before we sign a goalkeeper, a centre-back, a left-back and a striker.

There is probably scope to stretch Newcastle’s transfer budget further for the right player, but the owners will be wary of not overspending so early into the project.

Paqueta is a dream signing for the Magpies, and could become a real hero at St James’ Park. However, it probably isn’t as straightforward as some fans would hope.
