‘Certainly’: Newcastle have the money to tempt £50m star into signing for them – Romano

Journalist Fabrizio Romano has stated that Olympique Lyonnais could decide Lucas Paqueta’s future in the coming weeks (CaughtOffside), with a move to St. James’ Park potentially appealing to the Brazilian midfielder.

Lyon are yet to receive any official proposals for Paqueta, but that could all change and Romano has suggested that the Magpies move could interest the 24-year-old.

Romano wrote: “Certainly Newcastle have the finances to make a tempting proposal.”

Additionally, the Italian journalist believes Newcastle’s project can appeal to many more top players this summer. That’s definitely an advantage if they wish to land Paqueta!

The Magpies might not be playing in Europe just yet. But they can build a team that can do so within the next couple of seasons or so. This could appeal to the midfielder, who’s proven he should be playing at the very top level.

In the past Lyon has sold their best players. So you’d think that if the Toon offered a fee that suited them, Paqueta could well make the move to Tyneside.

However, Romano expects the Magpies to face competition for Paqueta’s signature. Should the Brazilian move from Lyon, his former club AC Milan will receive 15% of the future sale. So clearly the French side will want a large fee should he leave.

Newcastle had a bid turned down for the midfielder. They offered £34 million (Mercato) in January in an attempt to sign him. Recently it’s been reported that the Magpies are willing to break their record transfer fee to get him. Paqueta’s friendship with Bruno Guimaraes will hopefully lure the midfielder to the club.

Paqueta would be some signing for Newcastle

With Paqueta’s future with Lyon in doubt, it would be a big signing from Newcastle. This season the Brazilian was nominated for the Ligue 1 Player of the Year.

There’s no doubt that Newcastle have the finances, they’re the richest club in the world. However, with a large amount of money spent in January, they’ll need to be careful. If they spend lots of cash this summer they could breach Financial Fair Play.

In an ideal world, the Toon find a way to sign Paqueta and not break the bank in the process. But that’s easier said than done and Lyon will want a lot for him.

So as much as Paqueta’s friendship with Bruno could help somewhat in getting the move done. Lyon will need to agree on a fee.

Some Toon fans will love the idea of an all-Brazilian midfield. Can you imagine Bruno, Joelinton and Paqueta all playing together?

We should know fairly soon the future of Paqueta. With a history of selling their best players, Lyon definitely could cash in on him. It’s just whether or not Newcastle think the fee they want is too much.
