There was some negative Newcastle United news on Wednesday night, as the Magpies advanced to the Carabao Cup final.
Newcastle beat Arsenal 2-0 to book their return to Wembley, as Eddie Howe gets a second chance to win the Carabao Cup after losing the 2023 final.
It was a special night for Newcastle United fans, who created an incredible atmosphere inside St James’ Park. Pretty much everything went right, while Newcastle were also boosted by Callum Wilson’s return.
But while one player returned to fitness, another injury was confirmed.
Eddie Howe confirms Joelinton injury after Newcastle United win

Heading into the game against Arsenal, Joelinton was a major doubt due to a knee injury.
That injury was confirmed last night, with the 28-year-old not involved at all in the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg. He was there though, with Joelinton spotted wearing a retro Newcastle shirt during the celebrations.
The Brazilian watched on from the sidelines, which is something he is going to have to get used to.
“I think he [Joelinton] will be out for weeks, not months,” Howe said.
“It’ll be enough to make him miss the next few league games, I think.”
Chance in midfield for Joe Willock
On Wednesday night, Howe replaced Joelinton with Sven Botman. Newcastle United went to a back five, as Howe pulled off a tactical masterclass.
But that is unlikely to be the long-term solution during Joelinton’s absence. It feels likely that the Magpies will revert back to their 4-3-3 formation, which means a chance for someone in midfield.
There are three candidates to replace Joelinton: Sean Longstaff, Lewis Miley and Joe Willock.
Each have their unique qualities, but it is Willock who feels most likely to come into the side during the next few weeks.
That would represent a tremendous opportunity for the £25million midfielder, as players begin to battle for a place in the Carabao Cup final starting XI.
Willock has looked out of form as of late. He has struggled for consistency, despite showing flashes of brilliance earlier in the season.
This potential spell in the starting lineup could allow Willock to get back to his best, and it could come at the best possible time. If he gets the opportunity and starts to play well, he could suddenly find himself starting at Wembley next month.
