Newcastle United were unstoppable against Arsenal at St James’ Park on Wednesday night.

It was a night that Newcastle United fans may never forget because of what it meant to them and the players.

In the fallout of Newcastle’s win against Arsenal, players have taken to social media to celebrate the win. Bruno Guimaraes dedicated the win to Newcastle legend Rob Lee and was in the comments section for most of his teammates afterwards.

Joelinton was seen celebrating at St James’ Park after missing the game through injury, the Brazilian is set for a spell on the sidelines with a knee problem.

Elsewhere, Newcastle media mocked Mikel Arteta for his Carabao Cup ball comments from the previous leg – the Magpies will head to the capital in March to take on defending Carabao Cup champions Liverpool in what should be a memorable game for either side.

With another Carabao Cup final pencilled in, Micah Richards has not taken Alan Shearer’s assessment of the game well.

Alan Shearer and Micah Richards disagree after Newcastle statement

The Newcastle legend was in top form after the Magpies beat Arsenal. Shearer joked with Ian Wright about Arsenal’s defenders and could not praise the team enough after the win.

Shearer praised Kieran Trippier for his work in the win, a player who was considered an ‘unsung hero’ for his efforts. The 34-year-old could be in contention to feature in Newcastle’s trip to Birmingham in the FA Cup on Saturday.

Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, Shearer said that Eddie Howe ‘schooled’ Mikel Arteta, but Micah Richards did not agree with him in the slightest.

“Alan, ‘schooled’ is a strong word. You can’t say that. Arsenal had chances.” Richards said. Shearer immediately responded and doubled down on his statement but Richards was not having any of it.

Richards said: “Odegaard had a chance to score to make it 2-1, Arsenal had chances!”

Finally, Shearer put the argument to bed when he said: “Newcastle gave Arsenal a lesson. They’ve bossed them in two legs, two games. One at Arsenal and one at Newcastle – they bossed them all over the park.”

Gary Lineker also chose to take a pop at Arteta’s comments about the Carabao Cup ball when he said “it must have been the ball, Alan.”

Alan Shearer has high praise for Newcastle

Shearer’s words did not just stop with Trippier, Newcastle’s record goalscorer could not praise other members of the team highly enough.

Shearer referred to Bruno Guimaraes as ‘brilliant’ for his efforts against Arsenal and even commented on Alexander Isak’s social media post.

Isak’s post simply said ‘Wembley’, Shearer took the time to comment ‘well played man’.

There has been talk of Isak taking Shearer’s number nine shirt at the end of the season, Callum Wilson is out of contract at the end of the campaign and while Howe confirmed talks are ongoing, there was no indication that he was definitely going to stay.

The Magpies will need to fend off interest from the likes of Arsenal for Isak’s signature in the summer – if he leaves, they are expected to bag a British record transfer fee for him.
