Birmingham City vs Newcastle United team news

Callum Wilson will be hoping to make his first start of the season after returning from injury off the bench on Wednesday.

However, Sven Botman will miss the game due to the injury that forced him off the field late on.

Howe said ahead of the match: “I don’t think he’ll be available this weekend. He’s taken a knock to the opposite knee to his ACL injury.

“It isn’t a serious injury but it’ll keep him out of Birmingham before we assess him next week.”

Joelinton, Harvey Barnes and Jamaal Lascelles remain sidelined and Howe has also made it clear he will rotate his starting XI so Nick Pope, Emil Krafth, Lewis Miley, Joe Willock, Sean Longstaff, Matt Targett and Tino Livramento could all come in.

Prediction

In football, euphoric victories are often followed by bemusing defeats so it wouldn’t be surprising if Newcastle slipped up here and crashed out of one cup after making the final of another.

Birmingham may be in League One but they have the budget of a top-end Championship club and the strike force to match.

It wouldn’t be the most shocking upset of all time, especially if Newcastle’s field a weakened side.

But, if those players that come in want any chance of playing the final at Wembley then they have to impress.

Prediction: Birmingham 1-2 Newcastle.
