Newcastle United now know exactly how long Sandro Tonali will be unavailable after his ban was confirmed.
Less than 24 hours after the Magpies’ Champions League defeat to Borussia Dortmund, the club received official confirmation regarding Sandro Tonali‘s ban for betting.
The 23-year-old has been investigated by the Italian Football Federation, and it had been reported that a 10-month ban was coming his way that would end his debut season on Tyneside early.
That has proven to be the case, with Tonali now suspended from playing in competitive games for 10 months. However, he will still be able to train with Newcastle United, while he can also play in friendlies.
It is such a shame that the midfielder is now unavailable for such a long period of time, but at least he can continue to train with his new club. Tonali will continue to receive support from everyone associated with Newcastle United, just like he was on Saturday during the win over Crystal Palace.
But after a slow start to life in black and white, things could not be going much worse for Tonali on Tyneside, just months after he arrived from AC Milan for £55million.
Since the investigation involving Tonali began, questions have been asked about AC Milan’s knowledge on the situation, with some wondering whether it may have influenced their decision to sell the Italy international to Newcastle.
However, an update from the Telegraph has put that speculation to bed.

Newcastle do not think AC Milan knew about the Sandro Tonali situation
According to the Telegraph, Newcastle believe that AC Milan did not know anything about Tonali’s situation after looking back and investigating what happened before he moved to St James’ Park.
The report adds that the Magpies have been waiting until Tonali’s punishment was confirmed before taking any legal action – although they may not do anything at all.
Given Tonali’s affiliation to AC Milan and the swiftness of his move to Newcastle, it was easy to understand why some fans suggested that something untoward had gone on.
However, it always did feel unlikely, and the club appear to be confident that they have not been used by the Serie A club.
It is merely an unfortunate situation, and one that means we will not see Tonali play a competitive game for Newcastle until August 2024.
