As Newcastle United await news on Sandro Tonali’s ban, Eddie Howe is preparing his side for a crucial Champions League game.
The Magpies face Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League at St James’ Park tonight, as they look maintain their position at the top of the group.
Eddie Howe has no new injury concerns going into the game, but the big question mark has been next to Sandro Tonali‘s name.
The 23-year-old is being investigated for betting by the Italian Football Federation, and looks set to receive a lengthy ban. It has been claimed that he could miss the rest of the season.
It was even claimed that confirmation could arrive before tonight’s game against Borussia Dortmund, meaning that Tonali was unlikely to feature in the Champions League.

However, a new update from the Daily Mail suggests that we could see Tonali play in a Newcastle shirt one more time.
Sandro Tonali ‘likely’ to play for Newcastle against Borussia Dortmund
Daily Mail reporter Craig Hope has taken to X (formerly known as Twitter) to provide an update on the Tonali situation.
He wrote: “Now likely Sandro Tonali will feature for Newcastle tonight. 10-month ban agreed but details still being ratified. Crucially, for Tonali & NUFC, it appears he will be able to train with the club during suspension.”
Two positives bits of news regarding Tonali’s imminent ban
Having Tonali available for tonight will be a huge boost for Howe, who has started the Italian in both of Newcastle’s Champions League games so far.
It would be a surprise to see him start against Dortmund, but the fact that he could at least be in the squad is a big bonus.

On top of that, the other detail that Hope provided is very encouraging. While it is a shame that Tonali is going to be banned for so long, it is excellent that he will still be able to train with Newcastle.
That should mean that he is in a great position to have a huge impact when his suspension comes to an end in 2024.
In the short-term, we might get to see Tonali play one more time before his ban was confirmed. That should mean he gets another wonderful reception from the Toon Army, just like he did on Saturday against Crystal Palace.
