What Alexander Isak is thinking ‘right now’ as Newcastle United eye new contract talks

Newcastle United striker Alexander Isak has had interest from several clubs recently.

There is no doubt that Paul Mitchell’s phone will be blowing up in the summer because of how well the 25-year-old has performed this season. Alexander Isak is Newcastle’s top goalscorer this season, scoring 19 goals in all competitions.

The Swede has struggled in the last couple of Premier League games, however, failing to find the net in defeats to Fulham and Manchester City. He has the opportunity to get back to his usual goalscoring self as Newcastle take on Nottingham Forest at St James’ Park on Sunday – a huge game in the race for the Champions League.

Reports in January claimed that Arsenal were big fans of Isak who scored two goals against them across the Premier League and Carabao Cup this season. However, Newcastle United had no intention of letting him go midway through the season.

Mitchell has now been tasked with getting Isak to sign a new deal – deterring any interest from interested parties for the immediate future.

With Newcastle eager to keep Isak, a new report has said how he feels about all of the transfer speculation.

Alexander Isak’s stance on Newcastle exit

Newcastle’s form has meant that they have slipped down the Premier League table in the last few weeks. After sitting nicely in the top four the Magpies now find themselves in seventh and teetering on the edge of missing out on European competition.

If they stay where they are it would mean they will qualify for the Europa Conference League, but Newcastle players and staff have much bigger ambitions than that.

According to TeamTalk, Newcastle are not thinking about Isak’s possible departure at this point. Their full focus is on getting back into the Champions League which would make negotiations for Isak’s proposed new deal much easier to complete.

The report claims that Isak is also only thinking about helping Newcastle secure a top-four finish right now. Should Newcastle give Isak a new contract, it is believed that he would become the club’s highest earner – overtaking Bruno Guimaraes’ £160,000-per-week wage.

If Isak were to leave, it would have to take a substantial bid that would break the existing British record transfer fee. Reports in January suggested Isak could cost as much as £150m in the summer.

Newcastle must give Alexander Isak what he wants

It’s fair to say that Newcastle have never had a player like Isak in the past. The Swede is unique in the fact that his tall, slender frame can still manoeuvre like a cat in a sticky situation.

His performance in Newcastle’s Carabao Cup win against Arsenal was further proof that he does not need to score goals to cause constant problems to a defence.

Isak would be an incredibly difficult player to replace, even if they bag a huge transfer fee for him. That’s why qualifying for the Champions League is now so much more important. Eddie Howe has the difficult task of guiding his limited squad back to the top four with 13 games left in the Premier League season.

The Swedish is a player who is more than good enough to be playing Champions League football every season. It’s now down to him and Newcastle’s squad to deliver that for him.
