During what has been a great month for Newcastle United, Bruno Guimaraes signed a new contract with the club.

The £40m midfielder has had a transformative impact on Newcastle since joining from Lyon and was reportedly attracting interest from the likes of Real Madrid before signing a deal running through until 2028.

Though there is believed to be a release clause in the agreement, having Guimaraes secure his long-term future at the club has to be seen as a major positive.

Arguably the key player in Eddie Howe’s side, the 25-year-old has been rewarded for his fantastic performances. And then some.

Indeed, according to Goal Brazil, Guimaraes has received quite the pay packet.

The outlet suggest there are only two Premier League players who now earn more than the Brazilian at St James’ Park.

It is claimed only Liverpool talisman Mohamed Salah and Manchester City’s record-breaking forward Erling Haaland are on bigger contracts throughout the entire division.

The salary is said to have drawn him level with City’s Kevin De Bruyne, representing quite the show of faith from decision makers at St James’ Park.

Guimaraes is said to have told the club’s owners that he would listen to their proposal before even considering any other move.

You get what you pay for

Howe was reportedly reluctant to break the existing wage structure over the course of the summer window but, at some point, that needed to change.

With Guimaraes attracting interest elsewhere, a compromise had to be reached.

Though not quite at his best earlier this season, the Brazilian is back at his best and has starred in the Champions League. Though paying big money for big players is no guarantee of success, Guimaraes has continually fulfilled his side of the bargain.

He more than deserves it.
