The £25m star Eddie Howe could sign to prove he calls the shots at Newcastle United now

Eddie Howe looks to be in a strong position to bring signings into Newcastle United this summer.

Owners PIF have struggled to bring players into Newcastle United over recent transfer windows, largely because of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

However, that now looks set to change. Newcastle are confident about their PSR position this summer, having sold players over the last few transfer windows.

Eddie Howe wants Newcastle to sign players quickly this summer. Having gone so long without a first-team addition, it’s natural the manager would make that demand of the Newcastle United owners.

What happens next, however, may be slightly unclear following the departure of Paul Mitchell. Indeed, Mitchell left his role as Newcastle’s sporting director on Tuesday, after just over a year.

Luckily, Mitchell’s exit is not set to impact Newcastle’s transfer plans, with the window set to open soon.

Howe wants Newcastle to sign a new goalkeeper this summer, which makes more links with Aaron Ramsdale interesting.

Newcastle United interested in Aaron Ramsdale

According to The Chronicle, Newcastle are interested in signing the Southampton goalkeeper.

Ramsdale is understood to have a £25million release clause in his contract on the south coast, following Southampton’s relegation from the Premier League

Howe worked with Ramsdale during his time at Bournemouth and the report adds that if the club sign him, it would suggest the manager is calling the shots on the transfer front following Mitchell’s departure.

Aaron Ramsdale open to Newcastle United move

Despite a dreadful season for the Saints, the former Arsenal stopper has previously proven he’s a more than capable Premier League operator.

In fact, during the 2024/25 campaign, only Brentford’s Mark Flekken made more saves.

Ramsdale is reportedly open to joining Newcastle this summer and, at an apparent £25million, he certainly looks attainable.

Still, Ramsdale is not the only goalkeeper the club are thought to be looking at.

Newcastle are still interested in signing James Trafford, who has just played a starring role in getting Burnley promoted from the Championship.

With plenty of options already on the books in the Newcastle United squad, it’ll be interesting to see what happens on the goalkeeper front this summer.
