Statistics now reveal Newcastle have the hardest working player in the Premier League

To play for Newcastle United under Eddie Howe is certainly a demanding physical task.

Clearly, Newcastle have some players of supreme quality. Alexander Isak has been hailed as a “generational talent”, while Anthony Gordon has been tipped as perhaps the best left-sided forward in the Premier League.

Still, as the old saying goes, hard work beats talent when talent when talent doesn’t work hard.

Having a huge amount of quality just isn’t enough. There has to be a work ethic and a willingness to run, with Eddie Howe making clear the “intensity is our identity” mantra while still at an early stage of his tenure at St James’ Park.

Lewis Hall, after all, this summer suggested that playing for Newcastle required a different level of fitness entirely.

Clearly, Newcastle are not a brilliant football team all of the time. They certainly have moments and the last three results perhaps point to some consistency at long last but very few teams are perfect in every single game.

What can rarely be doubted, however, is there willingness to work and that brings us to Bruno Guimaraes.

The Brazilian has shown himself to be a player capable of magical things on the ball but that only tells half the story. Guimaraes is rarely injured and new statistics reveal the extent of his stunning work off the ball.

How Newcastle have the hardest working player in the Premier League

The Daily Mirror have compiled a list of the players who have covered the most distance in the Premier League this season.

RankPlayerDistance covered (km)
1Bruno Guimaraes122.8
2Kai Havertz122.6
3Lewis Cook119.5
4Dejan Kulusevski118

Guimaraes, amazingly, sits top of that list, amassing a total of 122.8km.

There were once doubts about Bruno Guimaraes as an athlete

Guimaraes is neither just a talented ball player nor just a midfield destroyer. At his very best, he is both.

Incredibly, pundit Danny Murphy once even doubted his athleticism, something Guimaraes bit back at following the end of last season.

An absolute engine in the middle of the park but someone capable of creating magic on the ball, the Brazilian is the beating heart of this Newcastle team.
