Bruno Guimaraes played a big role in getting Newcastle United into the top seven.
The midfielder has been the one constant in a season to have robbed Newcastle of so many of his teammates time and time again.
Guimaraes, who now looks as if he may stay at the club this summer, missed just one Premier League all season.
He also played in every cup game the club have had to deal with and, broadly, has proven as excellent as ever.
Still, the brilliant Brazilian has not been without his criticism this season, albeit it has largely been external.
Back in February, pundit Danny Murphy suggested the 26-year-old was “not a great athlete”. In fact he suggested lacking that attribute would stop Guimaraes becoming one of the very best midfielders in the world.
Now, Guimaraes has responded.
Bruno Guimaraes has now fired back at Danny Murphy’s claims that he’s not a great athlete
After the final day of the season at Brentford, a 4-2 win in which Guimaraes scored and registered two assists, the midfielder made his feelings on the comments clear.
On X (formerly Twitter), he posted a screenshot of a graphic shown by Sky Sports noting that Guimaraes had in fact covered the most distance in the Premier League this season (423km).
Guimaraes captioned it: “He isn’t athletic” coupled with some rather sarcastic emojis….
Bruno Guimaraes in numbers: What are his stats for the season at Newcastle?
It has been another all-action campaign from Guimaraes and he’s delivered not only quality on the ball but defensively, too.

Seven goals and eight assists do not tell the whole story, after all.
According to FBREF data, no one in the Newcastle squad won more tackles (52). He ranks second behind Dan Burn for blocks (52). Only Burn and Fabian Schar have made more interceptions (33).
Guimaraes also blew all of his teammates away when it came to recoveries (272 to Schar’s 171).
Quality on the ball, a willing runner and someone who does his bit defensively (to say the least), it’s difficult to understand that particular criticism of Guimaraes.
