Bruno Guimaraes is Newcastle United’s most important player, but there is one reason why Danny Murphy believes he will never be considered one of the best midfielders around.
The 26-year-old is Newcastle’s talisman, and is the one player we cannot be without. That is why there is so much fear about him possibly leaving the club this summer to help with profit and sustainability rules.
Eddie Howe recently admitted that he thinks Bruno Guimaraes is world class, and a lot of Toon fans will agree. The Brazil international has been the Magpies’ best player this season alongside Anthony Gordon.
However, Danny Murphy believes there is one quality that Bruno does not possess, and thinks that is the reason he will never be one of the best midfielders on the planet.
Danny Murphy explains why Bruno Guimaraes will never be world class
Murphy appeared on TalkSPORT on Wednesday, and was asked by Simon Jordan if he thinks Bruno has a problem with regards to athleticism.
“Yes, absolutely,” he said.
“That is what will stop him being one of the best, because everything else in his game is superb. Great passer, technically gifted. But he’s not a great athlete.
“I feel for him because I was the same. I had to be on top of my game to look a good player. When I was below my best physically, I looked a bit lethargic and sloppy at times.
“He needs real athletes around him to shine. Normally they have got that with Joelinton, Willock and Longstaff. They surround him with amazing legs so you see the best of him.
“But to be fair to Bruno, his durability in terms of always being available… he always turns up. His athleticism is only a problem when he doesn’t have those around him to help him. He’s still a crucial player for them, but if you’re talking about the best midfielders in the world, that’s what will stop him being classed as one of them.”

Danny Murphy makes a good point about Newcastle talisman
On the face of it, it seems like Murphy is being harsh towards Bruno. However, he does have a point.
While he is an exceptional footballer, he is not particularly athletic. He does not glide across the pitch as if he is Jude Bellingham. Instead, he sometimes looks as if he is running in mud.
But that is why Howe surrounds him with runners, and why it is so exciting to see Joe Willock back. While he is not a better player than Bruno, he is certainly a better athlete.
Murphy does make a good point about Bruno, but he was quick to reiterate that he was not criticising the midfielders work ethic or fitness. He is excellent in those departments, but does not have the same running power as someone like his fellow countryman Joelinton.
And that is why Danny Murphy thinks Bruno Guimaraes will never be viewed as one of the best midfielders in the world, despite all of his ability.
