‘Special’ Newcastle United wonderkid will likely return from injury at the end of this month

Newcastle United have a few injury problems right now, but they are not far away from having a full strength squad.

Once the current international break comes to an end, the hope is that Newcastle will welcome Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson back from injury. That will be a big boost, as Isak and Wilson’s absences were massively felt at Goodison Park on Saturday as Newcastle drew 0-0 with Everton.

Sven Botman and Jamaal Lascelles are Newcastle’s two long-term absentees, with both players suffering ACL injuries earlier in the year. They should return to fitness before the end of 2024, and that could influence whether or not Newcastle reignite their interest in Marc Guehi.

Lewis Miley closing in on Newcastle return after injury

Newcastle United’s other injured player is Lewis Miley. He missed the end of last season with a back problem, then suffered a foot injury ahead of pre-season.

The 18-year-old has not played for the Magpies since March, but is now very close to a return.

Eddie Howe recently said that Miley is on track with his recovery, with the midfielder due back in training after the international break.

When Lewis Miley could be back in the Newcastle United team

However, Miley might not make an immediate return to first-team action.

That is according to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who has stated that Newcastle have no plans to rush Miley back given his age and the injuries he has had.

He played a lot of football last season – a lot more than expected. Howe had to rely heavily on Miley, with the Toon wonderkid making 26 senior appearances, three of which came in the Champions League.

That is why Newcastle are going to be careful with Miley upon his return, with Waugh adding that he might not play for the Magpies until the back end of October – and that will likely be as a substitute.

Carabao Cup tie could be perfect for Miley

While Newcastle are approaching with caution, Miley will no doubt be very keen to get back on the pitch as soon as possible.

The Magpies have three more games in October, and the Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea looks like the ideal opportunity for him to make his comeback.

Newcastle face the Blues in the cup at St James’ Park on October 30th, and it would not be a surprise if he features in some capacity that night – providing he does not suffer any injury setbacks.

This season could be tougher for Newcastle wonderkid

While Miley played a lot for the Magpies last season, the 2024/25 campaign could be a different story. Sandro Tonali is back from suspension, while Joe Willock and Joelinton are over their injury issues.

In that respect, Miley may struggle for minutes.

But that is nothing to worry about. He is still extremely young, and there will be a clear plan in place to ensure he reaches his potential in the black and white of Newcastle United.

Last season was just a taste of his talent – the best is almost certainly still to come from the ‘special’ Lewis Miley.
